I find it difficult to orientate in the Brussels metro/bus/tram network. At the train stations they don't type the last stop - only your destination. So you have to either ask which direction your train goes or you have to know it :) Leave a Comment Theme: Train

If you are under 26 you can buy a Go Pass for the Belgian railway system. It's currently (May 2005) 43 Euros for 10 one-way trips in 2nd class, any distance. Several people can share one pass, as long as they are all under 26 years old. You can buy the pass in train stations, ask the station attendants how to fill it in (you need to fill in each journey you make and it will be stamped on the train). Leave a Comment

If you are under 28 (not sure about age), Go Pass is ideal option for traveling around Belgium by train. 10 trip card costs just 46 EUR (as of Sep 2008). You just have to fill in one record per trip. The route is flexible, allowing you to get off in the middle and get on the next train again (e.g. Brussels - Bruges route could be split into Brussels - Ghent and Ghent - Bruges). Belgium is very compact country (travel time between Brussels and such cities as Ghent, Bruges, Anwerp varies between 30-60 minutes), so most travels could be done as one day trip. The belgian public transport system must be one of the best in the world. Complaining about it is a national sport however, yep, we are a spoiled bunch! Trains (www.nmbs.be) link every city, small or large. Highspeed trains (mostly) departing from Brussels South Station connect to Holland (Amsterdam,...), United Kingdom (London via channel tunnel $$), France (Paris, Lyon,...) and Germany (Köln,...). There is an excellent train-connection from Zaventem International Airport to the centre of Brussels, although not at night. Busses (www.delijn.be (Flanders),http://www.tec-wl.be/ (Wallonie), The buscompany that operates in Brussels does not allow links to be placed, how stupid is that??) ) are used for local transport and also have a elaborate network connecting virtually every village, large or small. Tickets for trains and busses can be purchased up to the last moment for national travel. For international trains, the earlier you book, the cheaper they will be (by large margines!). Being belgians, we have all kinds of possible reductions on tickets but you will have to figure this out by yourself as the people at the information desk often haven't got the slightest idea (sad but true).Busses for large distant travel are not popular but available non the less --> www.eurolines.com/. Belgians prefer the train though. A tramline (www.dekusttram.be) serves the whole coast from De Panne to Knokke. Taxis are more expensive than in the average european country. There is a great train system in Belgium. There is a weekend offer available. There are overnight trains to Germany and to France. Fast train Thalys serves Paris and Cologne. The TGV connects Brussels with destinations in France. Check the hp for details.

A friend of mine told me about this website. I've never used it yet, but it looks really promising. I've found a flight from brussels to cairo for only 199 euro. Just check it out. Leave a Comment

All in all a nice airport. Good connection to brussels by train (and to the rest of Belgium and Europe from there). The shops, bars and restaurants at the airport are very expensive. The trains (www.nmbs.be) do not ride at night so it is possible to get stranded in the airport (happened to me once). Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane
