Driving

You may drive in Belgium if you are 18 years or older and carrying a full UK drivers licence - if it has no photo you MUST have your passport with you. You must also carry the vehicle registration documents and if you are not the registered owner you should be in possession of a letter from the registered owner granting you permission. Insurance must be adequate and a green card is advisable (insurance company will usually provide you with one of these).Headlights MUST be converted (converter packs can be purchased at all motoring stores in UK and also at ferry terminal). In poor daylight sdipped headlights MUST be used. You MUST carry a fire extinguisher, a reflective jacket and a warning triangle.A first aid kit is advised. If you have an EU registration plate (with the 12 stars) you no longer need to display a GB sticker.Speed limits are : Urban 50kph Open road 90kph Motorways 120kph

Bus

by OlafS

A cheaper but slower alternative for trains is the bus. I don't know about Wallonia, so this information is for Flanders only. A ticket for an entire day costs 6 euros when bought on the bus, or 5 euros when you buy it in a shop. This ticket entitles you to uses busses and trams of De Lijn company in all of Flanders, including Brussels. Busses tend to stop at a lot of places so it may take some time to get where you want, and I don't recommend the bus for long distances.

Driving in Belgium

by Dabs

Although I read somewhere that the accident rate in Belgium was one of the highest in Europe, we managed to make it out unscathed. Some thoughts if you are considering renting a car:-invest in a map, we bought the Michelin Benelux map from Amazon for about $10US and though a little unwieldy to use in the car, found it invaluable in planning a route and when road construction led us off our path.-if you are comfortable driving a manual, rent a diesel car if possible, diesel is much cheaper than unleaded gas. -automatic cars are almost non existent in Europe and are much more expensive to rent. We ended up with one for the same cost as a manual when we remarked that the compact manual car seemed too big-rent as small of a car as you can, streets are narrow, gas is expensive and parking tight-the major roads in Belgium are mostly in excellent condition and extremely well marked with...

Belgium by Train! It could not be easier!

by Paul2001

Belgium is one the easiest countries in the world to travel in. This is largely the result of an excellent network of railroads. The trains, operater by SNCB, run frequently between all major destinations. They are also very clean and modern. There several passes available for tourists that are not outlandishly expensive either. Probably the best if you are spending a week or more in Belgium is the Rail Pass which gets you 10 station to station trips for 68 Euros for 2nd class and 104 Euros for 1st class. There are also discounted tickets for weekend trips, for those under 26 years old and of course there are senior discounts too.If you are going to spending alot of time on the rails in the Benelux countries then I might recommend that you purchase a Benelux TourRail Pass. They will allow you to use the rail network in all of the Benelux countries for five days over a period of a month....

Easy Access

The country's transport system's dominated by its efficient rail network. The fastest services are the InterCity trains, backed up by InterRegional and local trains. If you're under 26, ask for a 'Go-Pass' (10 journeys for more or less EUR 45). If you're older than 26, ask for a 'Rail-Pass' (10 journeys for more or less EUR 60).

The main international airport is Zaventem, 14km north-east of Brussels. The Brussels Airport Express runs up to 4 times an hour to and from Brussels North, Central and South Stations. Every hour 1 train goes through to De Panno, 1 to Gent and 1 to Mons/Quevy. Trains run from just before 5a.m. until about midnight. A trip to Brussels takes 15 to 30 minutes.A bus station's located on the ground level. There's a direct connection with Antwerp and Eindhoven, too.Car rental companies are located in the arrivals hall and are open from 6.30a.m. to 11p.m.

Rail trips in Europe

by Luchonda

Best way to travel around in Belgium is by train ! You get everywhere - rather cheap and when there is no federal strike - you will be on time !And buying a ticket on the Eurostar -you can reach the impressive cities like London or Paris - in a minimum of time, approx. 2hrs 20 to get there, in the inner hearts of the metropolic cities.

To Belgium ... by cheap airlines

by Luchonda

Zaventem Airport - a modern airport in Europe and gateway to many cities in the world. The most interesting airports - logistic wise - you will find in Asia (Hong Kong, Nagoya)But BXL airport is number ONE for selling the famous Belgian chocolate, Bxl Charleroi is famous for selling cheap tickets - but take care of the schedules.
