Zaventem International Airport

by Jozzzef

All in all a nice airport. Good connection to brussels by train (and to the rest of Belgium and Europe from there). The shops, bars and restaurants at the airport are very expensive. The trains (www.nmbs.be) do not ride at night so it is possible to get stranded in the airport (happened to me once).

IN SEARCH OF MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION....

by eden_teuling

In search of means of transportation: come by air, by sea, by car, cycle or walk, take a cruise.........all is possible, believe me!! and I can know because when you see the map (enlarge it) you can see Middelburg (where I live) and at the same time see how close Brugge, Gent, Antwerpen and Brussels is to my house: 1-2 hrs. and never more........so I am at home there...Public transport is reliable, frequent and punctual!!!!! there are buses, trains, planes, boats, bikes and you can rent a lot of these means of transport!!

Rather railtripping than roadtripping

by Norali

Railtripping, imho, is the best way to visit Belgium. Yet, I use to enjoy my roadtrips and bikerides in Belgium. They are even my favourite for letting me stop here and there, enjoy evenings in far places.Railtripping to hop from a city to another and walking to visit each city. For the country being so small, its railway net is one of most dense in the world (if not, the most). Best place to base yourself is Brussels and from there, nip over Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven go to Tournai, Ardennes, Namur, Liège... etc.. and lesser known towns.Check http://www.b-rail.be/Some cons:-time constraints (better not stay too late somewhere.. trains don't circulate at wee hours). Check below website to know about the last train rides.-you can't step down and stop over areas as you would like. Some pros: -no concern about parking (fees, time wasted in looking for parking lots...)-cheap

Train

by OlafS

OK, I'm biased. Coming from the Netherlands I'm used to a railway company that regularly increases its prices while service only gets worse. Punctuality has become a myth, a thing people seem to remember without being actually sure if it ever existed. Poor Belgium has nothing to do with this, but still I feared the worst for my first traintrip through my new country. It turned out quite good though. First, I had calculated the price of my ticket (Turnhout-Brussel) beforehand, but as I travelled in a weekend it was almost 50% cheaper than that! For 9,40 euro I went to Brussels and back. Second, the train was punctual. Third, I had no trouble finding a non-smoking place. It did seem to me that trains run slower than in the Netherlands, but I call that a minor point. A major negative point for me is that you're not allowed to get out at stations along the way. You can buy an extra ticket...

By plane

by Helga67

Belgium's International airport is situated just outside of Brussels in Zaventem. Are you coming by Ryanair, than you will be landing in Brussels South (as they call it). But actually, this airport is situated in Charleroi, a one-hour drive from Brussels.

By national train

by Helga67

Belgium has one of the densest railway networks in the world. All major towns have a train station, so travelling by train is a good option, although, not really cheap. On the website below you can read all you need to know about travelling by train in Belgium and special tickets, passes.

Belgium by air

by DanielF

The main airport in Belgium is Brussels' Nationaal in Zaventem. It is a rather small airport but with good connections to the rest of Europe and the French speaking African countries. The low-cost airline Ryan Air arrives at the airport of Charleroi, 65 km South of Brussels.

Driving (2)

by OlafS

OK, now you know you need a map. There's another reason why you need one, and it's called detours. There are lots of those, and although you're supposed to follow the signs you'll find sooner or later that there's no sign on an important point. At that moment you'll have to make up your own choice of direction. At that moment you'll be glad you have a map. You can also try to ignore the detour. Often it is easy to figure out an alternative route of your own, one that is much shorter than the official one. In that case you need a good sense of direction.

Take the train and have fun

by tompt

Belgium is a small country and it is easy to travel by train from one end to the other. The upside on this is that everybody can have one or more of that great belgium beers. We travelled by train from Antwerp to Gent, Brugge and Brussel. Every time with a group of VT members. And it was always fun !We travelled during the weekend and tried to buy a group ticket on saturday. Well said the man behind the counter, that is impossible. you have to order them upfront......OK what is the cheapest option? To take a weekend ticket. The next sunday we tried to buy a weekend ticket at the same counter with the same man. He now advised us to take the groupticket??!!This is Belgium, i gues.....Other train stories include the: OOPS, this train seems to be stopping at AntwerpSouth announcement. And ofcourse the conductors. The one that couldn't believe his eyes when we showed him a weekend ticket on...
