What can I say ? Common sense is the key

by Norali

OK... some noticed that your car fitted to their criteria of the "ideal" car to steal... Too bad! You wouldn't escape it.Now, if they just intended to pick some auto-CD, MP3 or your bag and wallet, you can still minimize the risk. While parking your car, even "Before" parking, don't forget to hide all valuable items (at least, the listed ones above) under your seats.. or if they don't fit in, in the back of the car.. Always think of that...It doesn't make of Belgian cities as the most dangerous areas where to park. You just have to pay attention. Some common sense is always useful.

Belgian ladies can be terrifying

by tompt

Be aware how you treat a belgian lady. As Tom found out the hard way, they can be mean and cruel. Beating on your head with their umbrella. And what was Tom doing? He just forgot to say Thank You........Well here it is again: THANK YOU Dannie for showing us so much of your country during our visits!!

Walk off the excellent food

by gkitzmil

You'd better take walks or you'll find your body larger when you leave :-) Belgium has a great combination of many types of food. And of course you can get famous Belgian waffles, Belgian Chocolate, Belgian Beer, French style foods..... and many more. SO... take nice walks around the beautiful towns and into the countryside. You'll love the walking and that will help you to not gain weight.

(DON'T) Drink and drive

by Norali

One who hits Belgium with an intent of tasting beer, or at least, spend times in cafés and pubs like locals do, would face the problem of drinking.Personnally, I think that one who savours, sips the beverage would not face much troubles provided you ate something before drinking. As a beer specialist, the one I spoke to couldn't help but agree. Her nodds spoke for herself. Luckily enough, I spotted her grazing on pedestrian area at De Brouckère place and not in the middle of the Boulevard. She was not so far from pubs and cafés at the place, under the sun... mmm... Does it explain the fact that she could not utter any word? I guess so. When I noticed it and asked whether she was drunk, she just replied "Meuhh non!" with her threatening looks. Anyway, whatever she does, you guys, don't drink and drive. So many accidents are caused by this neglecting behaviour. Some partygoers end up in...

2003 heatwave

by Norali

Summer 2003 is really hot, sticky hot with this heatwave devastating Europe. While visiting Belgium, now is the time locals, who use to nag about Belgian rainy weather, would pray for some rain.My advices: bring some bottle of water while walking through the city. In addition, don't go under the sun if you are too sensitive unless you have your strong SPF cream. Sunglasses are useful to avoid this bright light hindering you.If you drive, don't leave neither the pets, neither the kids, neither your mother-in-law in your car while having your shopping spree. And bring some extra bottles of water. These are the times when the three categories above mentioned (yes, the older mother-in-law, too) are especially vulnerable. Take care of them.

Watch Your Credit Cards

by pukker

I have only twice had my Credit Card details "skimmed" - both times during trips to Belgium. This probably occurred at restaurants or garages, but since then I am always careful to watch my cards every move. Most cases of counterfeit fraud involve skimming, a process where the genuine data on a card's magnetic stripe is electronically copied onto another card, without the legitimate cardholder's knowledge.Skimming normally occurs at retail outlets - particularly bars, restaurants and petrol stations - where a corrupt employee skims a customer's card with a small, hand-held electronic device before handing the card back, then sells the information on higher up the criminal ladder where counterfeit cards are made. Criminals then go shopping with a copy of your credit or debit card with cardholders unaware of the fraud until a statement arrives showing purchases they did not make. How do I...

Water

by Sjalen

Even though I worked with environmental issues in Brussels, I never heard that drinking the water would be dangerous BUT it doesn't taste nice as it has been cleaned up and you understand why when you hear that Belgium has been dragged to court for releasing sewage water untreated into nature. The latest UNESCO rating of the World's drinking water (2003) placed Belgium as 122, well after many developing countries!!!

Kidnapped 3

by Aang

1,300 children disappeared in the Brussels region between 1991 and 1996. According to government official Mr De Baets, what happened after several of these disappearances was that Marc Dutroux paid large sums of money into various bank accounts

KIDNAPPED 2

by Aang

"How's your beer?" "Fine. Who is Alain Van der Biest?" "Belgian artist?" "After Dutroux's arrest in 1996, arrests were made in the Cool's case." "So, who got arrested?" "One of those arrested was Alain Van der Biest, a Socialist Minister, alleged to have close links with the mafia gangs of Liege." "How's your beer?" "Who is Guy Mathot?" "That's a difficult one." "Belgian TV came up with an anonymous witness who claimed that leading Socialist politician, Guy Mathot, had ordered Cools to be killed." "What sort of guy is Mathot?" "In 1994 Mathot was charged with corruption over kickbacks paid to Belgium's Socialist parties. Now, here's a famous Belgian you will have heard of. Who is Willy Claes?" "Famous Belgian chef?" "Claes was NATO Secretary General and a Belgian. He was caught up in the Mathot kickbacks thing and was forced to resign. Who is Melchior Wathelet?" "Tell me." "It was top...
