Rush Hour...like any other city you really need to be mindful of the natives. You are the one visiting, so try and pick up the pace or move to the side so they can get around you. It helps and keeps them happier!

by chrisse_d

In Belgium there is a good transportation net, when you go by car, you''l see the good ways. But at those good ways are very excited, egoistic people, who don't see at anybody on their way!Drive very careful. And actually this is not a danger but a warning:In Flanders most of the people don't speak good dutch(like in the Netherlands)but they speak ''Flemish''a mix of dutch and french words. So when you have learned dutch to visit belgium, people will understand you,but i think most of them answer in Flemish. But no panic...flemish is not difficult to understand from dutch,it is just different. And in the south they speak french.I mean the southern part called''Wallonië+the Ardennes''.What a difficult country...isn't it.and think of me who have to learn all these languages+English!!

Belgium is as safe as you want...

by Raquelle

Belgium is as safe as you want it to feel. You can walk down a street in the day without feeling threatened. Bruges is particularly safe. You do have to take basic precautions such as not to carry to much money, be wary of strangers, try not to flash around expensive camera equipment etc. You do have to be more wary in Brussels especially on public transport. For women travelling alone you may experience unwanted attention. Do not go to bars alone. It looks as if you are there to attract men (unless you want to). On a quiet Friday afternoon I went for a walk around Ostend's town centre. Within 10 minutes I had encountered two different groups of men asking for me to go out with them. If you don't want this kind of attention it is best to go out when it is busier.I would not advise women to walk about on their own when it is dark. However safe you may think it is you never know who is...

A major risk when visiting our country is gaining a few kilo's due to the marvelous food or getting a chocolate addiction. Crime is low, but traffic seems to be quite 'thrilling' compared to other western european countries.

by steventilly

Well, I said it before and I'll say it again. The main danger is that you just fall in love with the place and don't want to come home. Oh, there's also the danger that you will gain so many pounds from eating chocolate and drinking beer!

One thing I keep hearing a lot, especially from people abroad, is the hazardous traffic in Belgium. If you're planning to travel by car, be very careful, especially in larger cities (Brussels and Antwerp).

You might buy too many comic-books and be forced to leave some behind since you realize you can't carry them all..but remember..you can always bring your mom or somebody with you on the next trip..ok?

by Toni_WB

I read a report once where it rated Belgium the second most corrupt country in Europe after Russia! I would find it difficult to argue against that rating! Things are getting better however and as a tourist, you should not experience too many of its effects. However, beware that Belgium is still a country where its various police forces wield an inordinate amount of power. It is not a police state as such but it comes a close runner-up!Always carry some form of identity with your photograph on it. The simplest means is to always have your passport with you. A police officer can demand to see your identity at any time. Not being in possession of suitable identity documents is an arrestable offence! Also remember that if you are driving a car, your own or hired, you must have your driving licence with you. Although you may not be arrested for failing to produce your licence they can (and...

Watch out for the...

by filipdebont

Watch out for the Signalisation along the road. As in a typical Belgain way it is not always very logical.Like this road sign, which says if you want to go to Kortrijk you have to follow the letter 'G', and if you want to go to Oostende (is also direction for Gent) you have to follow the letter 'K'.If anyone among you guys can explain the logic in this, please send me a note. Maybee the K stands for Kust (which means Coast, Oostende is situated at the coast), but then I can't link the G with Kortrijk (which is also direction of France, Spain, . . .euch . .yes it is the G of Gibraltar).
