Kraljeva Sutjeska is an old village, not that far from Kakanj but with the feeling of being rather removed from its nearest neighbour and an air of peace and quiet about it. It has a large Franciscan monastery which seems out of proportion to the village size. The monastic buildings date only from the 1890s but the Franciscan presence here (and in Bosnia) dates back many more centuries. There is a small museum of paintings and religious artefacts as well as a library where Franciscan and local history is documented. (Visits can be arranged and are free but a donation is always welcome.)
The village itself has some old houses, including the restored Desper House from the 19th century. It also has a mosque, said to be of 15th century foundation and one of the oldest in the country. From the village you can walk to the hill of Bobovac, the seat of Bosnian kings with the mausoleum of one, Tvrtko, at the top. The excavated ruins of an earlier palace can be seen near the monastery as well as quite a good example of a 'stečak', one of the so-called 'Bogomil' tombstones from the Middle Ages found all over Bosnia. (For more of these, see under the destination 'Radimlja'.)
Kraljeva Sutjeska is somewhere where you can sample rural tourism in Bosnia and a local agency "Katarina" has been set up to provide accommodation and visits to places of historic and scenic interest., (see website). Hopefully it will encourage more people to visit parts of rural Bosnia such as this.
