Best way to get to Visoko is taking the autobus. The Centrotrans autobus lines in Bosnia is very good, and you can take them anywhere in Europe as well. You can also take the train from Sarajevo or Zenica, but the train is still not the best option. Aggression on BiH ruined the service quite a bit. There are very many autobuses that run from Sarajevo to Visoko. It only costs about 5-6KM for a return trip! This is easiest and most convienient way into Visoko! You can take the tram in Sarajevo to autobus station, buy your ticket there, and then it is just as easy as getting on board! The ride is very beautiful too. When you arrive at the nice autobus stanica in Visoko, you can even walk to the Hotel, as it is just across the bridge. If you have a lot of baggage, there will be taxis right at the station that can take you to the Hotel or anywhere else for not much money. Leave a Comment

The best way to get around Visoko is on your feet! It is not a very large town, and so you can reasonably get anywhere if you walk. It is also very peaceful and pleasant. Many people from Visoko enjoy just going out for a walk during the evening for no other reason than to enjoy the night air and sunset. If you have problems walking or it is hard for you, there are of course taxis. Three taxi stands that I know of are near Bijela dzamija where Carsijska meets Podvisoki, right over the bridge when you drive into the city (crossing from the autobus station), and at the autobus station itself. You can flag a taxi of course too. There is no public transportation in this small town other than that, but if you are going to another town in the region you can take Centrotrans, especially to Kakanj or town on the route Sarajevo-Visoko. This picture is from ArchNet by becir This is a very famous mosque, in Bosnia and in the world. It has won the Aga Khan Award for Islamic Architecture. The inside is very unique as well, with natural skylight used to light the prayer-hall. It is very beautiful and a very nice spot for prayer if you are of the Muslim faith. It is not quite the same as Begova in Sarajevo but it is definitely worth a visit. Leave a Comment Address: Ulica Bijela dzamijaDirections: If you walk down Ulica Carsijska, coming from the bridge, bus station, and Hotel Visoko, you will see this mosque on your right side. You cannot miss it. It is the most recognizable building in the town.

My picture (not from ArchNet) by becir Unfortunately, the mosque still needs to be restored. This is a picture of what it looks like right at this moment. Leave a Comment

Here is my picture... by becir If you would like to see an example of very old Turkish Ottoman architecture in Visoko, please visit this beautiful wooden mosque. It is currently being renovated as you will notice when you see it. It was once a very beautiful building and will be once it is restored. The top of the minaret is very beautifully decorated but this is something you cannot see from my horrible photo! Leave a Comment Address: Ulica CarsijskaDirections: This is on Carsijska on the bank of the river.

from archnet.org by becir This is a better picture from ArchNet.org showing the detail of the minaret of this mosque. Please note that the mosque was closed when I was last there for renovation so you cannot pray here. Leave a Comment

by becir This was and is the "robna kuca" or the department-store. As you can see from my picture, you will not find much to buy there now. It will hopefully be rebuilt to give people of Visoko more options for shopping. If you like this "war tourism," which personally I do not understand, there are things to see in Visoko. The road in to the town is full of buildings that have been completely destroyed and only God knows if they will ever be rebuilt again. I know that many people go to BiH to see things that happened during the war. You can come to Visoko to see some things like this, but again I do not understand the point of this. It is very sad and depressing because many times people died along with these buildings. Leave a Comment

A street in town by becir Take some time to walk around the streets of Visoko, especially if you are not used to an old traditional Bosnian or Balkan town. It is a very nice place, and you will see the beautiful and friendly people of Visoko. There are many beautiful houses here. I think you will enjoy the red roofed architecture that is so common in BiH. Leave a Comment

Looking towards the mountain side of town by becir Visoko means "high place" in the Bosnian language. It is in a beautiful mountain valley, and you can see many beautiful views for many kilometers around if you go on top of one of the mountains. It is at the foot of the Dinaric Alps, and just behind the town here are some very, very large Alpine mountains in between Visoko and the ancient city of Fojnica. There is a great chance to go hiking here too, and you can pass many beautiful days doing this or camping. Please be careful though and take a guide who knows what they are doing because there are those damn mines everywhere in this country!!! It is very sad and unfortunate, because I believe BiH is most beautiful country in Europe and our outdoor tourism could be huge if it was not for this! A good guide will know where and where not to go. Apart from the areas I know, even I do not go places where I do not know if there are mines...it is just too difficult to know what is safe and what is not. Leave a Comment

This is the minaret of this mosque by becir If you go past Bijela dzamija to where Carsijska joins Ulica Podvisoki, you will see this beautiful old mosque. Good example of old style undomed Turkish-Bosnian mosque. Leave a Comment Address: Ulica PodvisokiDirections: Keep going south-east down Carsijska from Bijela dzamija, bridge, Hotel, and bus station.
