Don't know what to eat tonight? How about a barbacue at the Smetovi picnic grounds? The name of this mountain, Smetovi, means "windy", so don't forget to take a jacket along. In recent times the tourist office built some water fountains, seating and grills up here, so all you need to bring is food and beer.

This hot spring is in Ticici (this means little bird, and the name fits) about 20 km outside of Zenica going towards Sarajevo on the left side of the road. Actually the whole country is off the beaten path, but this beats everything I have seen here. Watch out for steam on the left of the road and roasted lamb on both sides, otherwise you will miss it, as there are not really any buildings in this facility.

The water is 63 Celsius warm, contains some sulphur and iron and has been used for centuries by the local population. It obviously helps against rheumatism and psoriasis, and of course everything else from hangover to minor cuts. The hot water is mixed with cold in a couple of small concrete pools. No filtration is needed, as it is refilled several times per hour. You want privacy? No problem, check out the old open air bathtubs. Use the water hose for a shower. This is a predominantly Muslim area and I was there during Ramadan in 2009 and prepared for everything. To my relief they offered 6 types of beer and the roasted lambs on the spit were turning all day.

Until foreign investors discover, that these hot springs could fill a modern 500 square meter spa pool twice daily, this is the best wellness you can get in Europe for 50 Eurocents. Open all year.
