Things to Do

Vranduk

Vranduk, Zenica

GeoV Says:  About 14 km north of Zenica is the small fortress of Vranduk. What it may lack in size, it makes up for in location being situated high above a gorge in a loop of the River Bosna. The fortress was first mentioned in the early 15th century, (although the site may be older)....

A couple of interesting buildings

A couple of interesting buildings, Zenica

GeoV Says:  Zenica is primarily an industrial city which, as can be seen from other "things to do", has a small and colourful "stara čaršija" area with cafes and restaurants. In addition to the new museum, not far away is also the Hadžimazić House, a large traditional style...

Ottoman revival

Ottoman revival, Zenica

augustiner Says:  Very wise city planners decided to keep a huge park along the Bosna river in the center of the town. After the last war a Turkish battalion was stationed here and instead of just patrolling the countryside and going to cafes they excelled in brushing up Kamberovice Polje, as...

Go to the local museum

Go to the local museum, Zenica

augustiner Says:  The museum is new and located downtown next to the pedestrian area. It offers a wide range of well presented exhibits from Roman times, to the Ottoman period, Austrian rule up to the Partisan struggle and the breakup of Yugoslavia. Sometimes gives you the feeling this place...

Bakery and internet cafe

Bakery and internet cafe, Zenica

augustiner Says:  From left to right this is my favorite bakery, Salcinovic, check out the kifle (rolls) and the internet klub. The internet place has a nice oriental/historical flair to it, unless you have too many kids around you, that are shooting each other over the internet. In front of...

International Connections

This fancy LCD display stands in sharp contrast to the rest of the rather shabby looking train/bus station. Note the international connections between all the Bosnian destinations. This is how most of the diaspora comes home to visit. The bus system is reliable and inexpensive for checking out all Bosnian towns. A round trip for example to Jajce will cost 14 Euros.

Like in most countries in Europe the truck and bus lobby seems to have won against the railways. The interesting train connection that still works in Zenica is to Sarajevo and then on to Mostar. After Sarajevo this is one of the most scenic rides in Europe passing through rugged terrain with a series of tunnels, U-turns and aquaducts and going from continental to mediterranean climate. It is also cheaper than the bus.

Shopping

Dr. Pasha: Hand-made soap

Dr. Pasha: Hand-made soap, Zenica

augustiner Says:  Handmade soaps for different skin types and purposes with all natural ingedients. They come in cool looking cardboard boxes, partially with wood. According to the manufacturer ingredients like honey or lavender will help with everything from depression to dry skin. They are...

Get everything fixed

Get everything fixed, Zenica

augustiner Says:  The most popular vehicle around here is a 10 to 20 year old VW Golf. That means people here know how to fix stuff. So if you have a broken alarm clock, your TV remote control jams or the sole is coming off your ageing Birkenstocks than take them here to the experts. You will...

Local Customs

Yugo-nostalgia

Yugo-nostalgia, Zenica

augustiner Says:  Bosnia suffered most from the breakup of Yugoslavia. Tito held the country together for half a century, despite all ethnic and religious covetousness, and is still cherished by many as a great statesman and a symbol of good times gone. This picture adorns the wall in the...

Go nuts at the stadium

Go nuts at the stadium, Zenica

augustiner Says:  Bilino Polje Stadium is one of the two stadiums in Bosnia that hosts World Cup Qualifier Games. Generally it is considered a curse for foreign teams, because they usually lose. The Bosnian national team never lost on this field until the Euro 2008 qualifier against Hungary....

Off The Beaten Path

Panorama picnic area

Panorama picnic area, Zenica

augustiner Says:  Don't know what to eat tonight? How about a barbacue at the Smetovi picnic grounds? The name of this mountain, Smetovi, means "windy", so don't forget to take a jacket along. In recent times the tourist office built some water fountains, seating and grills up here, so all...

A cure for everything

A cure for everything, Zenica

augustiner Says:  This hot spring is in Ticici (this means little bird, and the name fits) about 20 km outside of Zenica going towards Sarajevo on the left side of the road. Actually the whole country is off the beaten path, but this beats everything I have seen here. Watch out for steam on...

Ski School for Kids

Ski School for Kids, Zenica

augustiner Says:  Smetovi, the local mountain, is a perfect place for children to learn to ski. In the first week of 2012 Zenica not only made the headlines in all major Bosnian papers but also channels like EURONEWS for the worst smog in the whole of Europe. Special disrespect goes to...

Learn to paraglide, ice climb, canyon etc., Zenica

augustiner Says:  Extreme Sports Club Scorpio is an experienced and well-established tour operator for all kinds of adventure sports. They must be good, because in the remote location where they are located, half-way up Smetovi mountain about 5 km from downtown Zenica, is not exactly the...

Go up Smetovi mountain

Go up Smetovi mountain, Zenica

augustiner Says:  The fastest way to escape the city is taking a 10 km ride straight to the top of Smetovi mountain. At an elevation of roughly 1000 meters you are in a picturesque nature setting with well kept picnic areas and a competely different climate zone than downtown Zenica. The...

City of Sports

City of Sports, Zenica

augustiner Says:  Zenica features brand-new European standard sport facilities including a track stadium and an indoor arena with new mall and hotel attached. The football stadium is being renovated at the moment. Recent sport events include the Balkan Games (a Balkan political union would be...
