Sarajevo Homes by tampa_shawn About 45% of the people in Sarajevo are Muslims and many follow the Muslim custom of removing their shoes upon entering someone's home. Many Bosnians converted to the Muslim religion to receive tax breaks during the Ottoman Empire (Turkish). After the Turks left, the communist took over. Tito and other communist rulers discouraged religious practices. This helps to explain why Bosnians are called the “Worlds Worst Muslims”…they drink alcohol, eat pork and will go shopping in Vienna long before they choose to visit Mecca. Although many of the Bosian’s do not follow the Muslim faith many did retain the habit of removing their shoes upon entering their homes and naming their children Muslim names. In addition, the Muslim faith in Bosnia has had a bit of a resurgence since the war. Maybe because Bosnian Muslims were the victims of one of the worst genocide campaigns in recent history....because of the religion! Leave a Comment

by Marcin75 Always take off your shoes when you enter somebody's home Always take off shoes entering the mosque Do not take 'offensive' pictures of people Be aware not to talk 'in Serbian' to a Muslim, 'in Croat' to a Serb and 'in Bosnian' to Croats Be politically sensitive and better do not joke about the past Be aware that if you invite somebody to the restaurant you are supposed to pay the bill Leave a Comment

What most people know but do not understand is Bosnia's cultural and ethnical diversity. We speak 3 languages, even though they all sound the same, we have 4 major religion, but first and foremost - we live together. What caused the war was an excess of nationalism that spilled the drop over the edge, but things are getting better every day... Leave a Comment

Arrakia is a local brandy made from plums. The Bosnians all harvest the plums and then make their own supply. Autumn is Arrkia season here. Several guys get together and rent an industrial sized still with which to make the liquid fire. They take tons of plums and put them in barrels and basically let them rot in water for 21 days. After this amount of time they run them through the still and have instant hooch. Some call it Bosnian Whisky but they all call the still the "Happy Machine." They all make 100 litres or more of this stuff so that they have a years supply. During the making of it they have parties so it is like a month long Arrakia festival. I will be glad when it is over because I am exhausted from attended night after night of it. OK, I'm lying. It is terriffic fun but is tiring. This photo is myself and my limey buddy Jerry Field. He is our token Englishman in Bosnia and he and I have become great friends during my year here. Leave a Comment

Arabic writings carved in stone, in Bihac by dabuwan Though just a few of the Bosnian moslims can read or speak arabic, there are always some arabic writings at the Mosques. This is because the only allowed "religious" language for Islam is Arabic, at list for some of the practices. Leave a Comment

by cyrus_irani Well, this is more of a realization then a tip. When I was young I learned about WW1 and how Archduke Ferdinand of the Austro-Hugarian empire was killed near a bridge by a serb nationalist named Gavrilo Princip - the assasination set off a sequence of events that led to carnage the continent had never before imagined... Last year I had the chance to visit that very bridge, in the city called Sarajevo, itself the scene of a brutal and pointless war and the deadliest seige in modern European history. Once named for Princip (the plaque at one end was removed, though nobody could tell me where it is) the bridge is right next-door to the scene of his momentous crime. To stand on the bridge and imagine the significance - for any person fascinated with history - is a very intense and moving experience. Leave a Comment

Bosnians were always known for their excellent humour, especially for the fact that they could make fun of themselves in every situation. A director from Sarajevo who now lives in Ljubljana once said: 'Slovenians and Bosnians have a lot in common - you like to make fun of Bosnians and so do we.' This surely lives on - you'll never hear so many Bosnian jokes as in Bosnia. Leave a Comment
