Umbrella: Sarajevo is a place where sun and rain coexist... so don forget your umbrella unless you are in summer months. Well, if you forget on rainy days cheap umbrella are on sale at Ferhadija near the bank ATMs and park.

Expect that you will have to carry your bags upstairs or on gravel / uneven paths, so do not take too heavy ones. Take some warm clothing / raincoat with you - Bosnia is in the mountains and 25 degrees centigrades in Split (Croatia) does not mean that there is more then -5 in Sarajevo! Basicly all is available in bigger cities. Normal set of medicines is sold by every pharmacy (they are modern and western-style). Popular films / batteries are widely accessible Well, expect mountain weather. Bosnia is now a normal country - you do not need to take many special things with you. Everything but books may be bought without big problems in bigger towns. It would be nice to have a guidebook bought abroad (although I haven't seen good ones), it seems that it is also easier to buy a map of BiH in somewhere else then in BiH. For sure you should bring many gifts for your friends in Bosnia - if...

There is no problem with toiletries and medical supplies in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Do bring mosquito repellent if you are travelling in summer, even though mosquitos are not a big problem. Photo equipment is easy to find, even if a bit expensive, and is of western standards. If you like hiking/camping, do bring gear, but be careful: quite a lot is still covered in mines. If you go to Bosnia-Herzegovina, you must have a passport. Most western nationals don't need a visa, but Aussies do. If you do need a visa, be sure to get it on beforehand, as the BH Border Service (DGS) will not issue you a visa on the border unless it is an emergency.

Winters can be nasty in these mostly mountaneous parts, so wrap up warm. You're definitely recommended to buy some traditional handicraft products like knitted clothes, socks, gloves and the like. They surely know how to make warm outfit there! Nothing special, everything is available in Bosnia. Visas are still required for most countries. I don't know the list by heart, so ask at the appropriate institutions.

It was a war zone!

Bug out bag, duffle bag, everything should be made of ripstop or cordura nylon. It goes from very hot to very cold. Layer your clothing. MIne detector, stun gun, pepper spray, extra ammo, etc.

A good map on Sarajevo and road-map would help. There are maps on sale but you can only trust the one recommended by Lonely Planet.
