    Day trip - Banja Luka

    by Odiseya Updated Mar 10, 2015

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Doboj is on crossroads and it have good roads and railways connection with all parts of country and with Balkan area and with most of European countries.

    Nice (and my favorite) day trip from Doboj is Banja Luka.
    Banja Luka is administrative, cultural, economic center and de facto capital of Republika Srpska, one of two entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
    The city is located in north-western part of country and is center of region call Bosnian Krajina. City center/downtown is place where you can feel urban atmosphere and start to familiarize with city life and culture.
    For more about Banja Luka see my Banja Luka page - Banja Luka

    Banja Luka is about 114 km by car and about 97 km by railway far from Doboj. It takes about 2,24 hours from Doboj to Banja Luka with train. And that is popular and best way to travel between those two cities. There is several railway lines. I recommend to start your journey in the morning and end at the evening. Trough years there is more or less same schedule for trains. It start at least in 07:30 h, arrived in Banja Luka till 10:00 h. By effective public bus you could reach City center for about 20 minutes.
    At the end there is last train on about 19:20-19:30. You will arrived in Doboj till 22:00 hours.

    Usora in Doboj

    by Odiseya Updated Oct 17, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    I like walking trails and walking around in towns and take the photos is my hobby even it is my town.

    New place for me in old Doboj is Usora. For all of you who read this tip and who is familiar with medieval state Usora - I am not mean about travel trough time. Doboj municipality and many other in North Bosnia was long time ago part of big region call Usora. Today the name is for river, municipality in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and part of Doboj.

    So, there is one part of Doboj that I recently re-discover on foot. It is not particularly recreation or historical travel, even it is both. Usora today is brand new suburb with many houses and many big concrete socialistic fabrics, mostly empty. There is a new idea about developing this area as touristic walking trail and local touristic organization (among many others) is support local project of inhabitants of Usora, Miljkovac and Makljenovac. In fact, on Saturday 28th September 2013 it was official open a Walking trail "Liješanj", named after creek along the trail. Still is lot to do but BRAVO for good work!

    For my opinion, best part of this walking tour is visiting of narrow bridge, across main road. It is a old railway bridge and now is nice reconstructed path across Bosnia river. Now it have and some industrial purpose but it is nice. I didn't go on other side of river yet, I mean not find some reason to across the bridge and take photos. Bridge itself, its construction and view is now enough for me.

    Industrial block now empty are depressing even before flood and it look sometimes like ghost town from western movies.

    I take my camera and waking away.

    Hike to Gavrici

    by Odiseya Updated Oct 10, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Gavrici is small populated village at the slopes of Trebava, near Doboj. It is actually Poljice village and wide area of Stanić rijeka village in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
    That area is about 1-2 km far from Doboj center. From city bridge there is short road to foot of Trebava mounting. First road on Trebava is road to Gavrići and Trifkovića glava suburb. It is small hill. You can recognized location for small Orthodox church on top. It is nice walking and hiking tour not so popular. Also, very good viewpoint on Doboj.

    It takes about 20-25 minutes by foot from Doboj center. The trick is to climb up to hill. It is steep. I find online some information from bike tour: total ascent is about 73 m and maximum elevation of 243 m.
    It have road (not so good) to top. But there are some difficulty. During ascent make sure to take care on first curve on the road. It need to have strong engine but be careful and have good break. The descend is also very challenging. Take care!

    Small Serbian Orthodox church is dedicated to Vulnerable Sisoje the Great (Serbian Cyrillic: Преподобни Сисоје Велики). The Saint is know among folks as protector of children and quick help in every trouble and sorrow. It celebrates on 19th July. It have strong influence on godliness of Serbs. Many interesting customs is connected with it.

    There is nothing to do there. Only visit church and take photos of Doboj. It is nice and good viewpoint. You could see wide area. From part of Ozren mounting, landfill and quarry and part of industrial zone and Doboj train station from south, Poljice village/suburb, city bridge and Doboj in front of it to wide Bosnia riverbanks and fields and rest of Trebava mounting on north-west side.

    There no much opportunity for socialization with locals. You could enjoy in quietness. I notice hawk on sky and sadly the fog over part of city ruing the photos.

    Note that hill behind church during the civil war was a line of demarcation. The are potential danger of mines. Visit only hill with church on it.

    If you coming by foot from Doboj center I recommend to buy some food and drink in two store in foot of hill, on the beginning to road to hill. There is necessary to carry many things all that time of walking. But there are nothing to buy on hill.

    I heard is nice to visit hill at night and see illuminated Doboj.

    Gostilj peak on mounting Ozren

    by Odiseya Updated Sep 29, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Gostilj is name of one of peak on mounting massif Ozren and is 773 meters high. This peak have a distinguish "look" with wooden orthodox cross and that is seeing from far away. It is very popular natural and vacation resort not only for people that do hiking or biking.

    On 11th September of each year this peak is known after the festival entitled "Days of tea", which is traditionally held on the Gostilj. This festival is dedicated to picking grass Iva for which there is a belief that it has the largest medicinal properties. The event had and special cultural program. According to the customs of the region, visitors will encourage to eat the famous tea grass. It is because locals belief - "the grass Iva - from dead makes a live person" (Serbian Cyrillic: Трава Ива - од мртва прави жива, read: Trava Iva - od mrtva pravi zhiva).

    It is best to use a car. It would be very challenging to use public transportation. There is a two ways. By bus or train to Boljanić village (from Doboj see my Petrovo transportation) and then very long hiking up to Gostilj peak. That is the best connection.
    The second road is from Doboj and via Preslica resort but there no any public transportation. It is about 7 km from Doboj till Preslica and about 35 km till Gostilj peak.
    I was reach to Gostilj peak from both direction and it was hard even I was partially traveling by car.
    If you have opportunity and energy try it. I think is wort every effort!

    Explore the mounting massif Trebava

    by Odiseya Updated Sep 27, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Ethnic-space entity called Trebava covers about 1500 km2. This unit is bordered to the west side with Bosnia River from Doboj and Posavina. To the south is separated from Ozren mountain with Spreča river. From east side Trebava is bordered by municipal centers: Gračanica and Gradačac. On the north side Trebava is Posavina and it is divided from that with town Modriča. East from Trebava is a mountain Majevica, and to the west are mountains Vučijak and Krnjin.

    I am personally very subjective here because my parents come from this area. I live some time here during troubled times in nineties.

    There is not yet comprehensive touristic offers like those regarding Ozren mounting. Mostly project is under lead of Modriča municipality.

    Most famous tourist attraction on Trebava is monastery complex Duga njiva and Day Celebration of St. Elias in Kožuhe on 2. August. But most famous sight here is nature itself.

    Popular places on Trebava are: Osječani, Kožuhe, Koprivna and Vranjak, there is many many more. You could find out more - Trebava

    But beauty don't come without price. Even is very populated especially parts along roads. There higher part of hills around military line hidden dangerous in shape of land mines. The locals is familiar with them. It is low possibility to across to them in every day walking and in populated places you don't have a reason for worry.

    Old town Doboj

    by Odiseya Updated Sep 11, 2014

    Yes, Doboj have its Old town, well something that still people call "Old town".
    Trough its 8 centuries that we know this valley where is today Doboj have suffered many changes during its long life. Pursuit to serve permanent needs of modern life Doboj was change. For better or worst, you can decide.

    Anyway, during Austian-Hungarian occupation of country was formed Old town. Main street was Quin Maria street that lead to the Old train station. Not so many original building was preserve today or it save during its restoration but still is nice place to visit.
    Besides modern residential complex there is only one small cafe in that area. I hope it will not last to long. Old town become off beaten place for many locals too.

    There no special touristic sign to show you direction to the Old town but don't be discourage.
    Following to central streets: Saint Sava street (main) and King Alexander street on the left side of Doboj that lead to the Gradina fortress and to the exit of Doboj.
    On base of Gradina fortress go forward to the nice colored residential complex and follow its external side and from intersection turn right from the street that follow to the town exit.
    Or talk to the locals. Or even let yourself to explore the town on your own - it is safe, at least during days.

    NOTE: OLD TOWN IN DOBOJ ARE CURRENTLY UNDER RESTORATION FROM OUTCOME FROM FLOOD FROM 15TH MAY 2014.

    Picnic at Tovira

    by Odiseya Updated Apr 12, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Tovira is small area on prominent hill on complex Trebava easily accessible from main Doboj- Modriča road. Most significant sight on this hill is old Orthodox church and small arranged area close to the local cemetery.

    Note that this is not a touristic sight so there is not a shop or cafes. This is a perfect area for relaxation and picnic. Bring your food with you and here you can find a water in nice decorated faucet in front of church. Even is surround with houses this is very peaceful place.

    Besides time for services which is here on Sunday morning or during religious fest there no many people visiting here. So, it is a small hiding gem and off off beaten path area.

    I like set of wooden table and small chairs that are actually stumps. I think is best to bring your blanket. Church is very nice. There is also very interesting memorial faucet surrounded by benches. On it is description that Zoran Božić dedicated this faucet in memory on his late mother Krsta Božić born Lazić in 2001 on date of Spasovdan (on 24th May according to Serb Orthodox calendar).

    I come here with bike. It is very nice hike too. In one moment is very slope and you need to put more effort but take your time it worth it. I take about 15th minutes from road to up to hill.

    From Doboj to Modriča main road try to don't miss turn and touristic sign for church about 12 km from Doboj. It is between two villages: Grapska and Bušletić.

    Farm of fallow deers in Konopljište

    by Odiseya Updated Apr 12, 2014

    Farm of fallow deer is located in small pictures village call Konopljište between small hills and in forest of Ozren mounting in Doboj surrounding. It is placed on 550 m above see level. To this place lead a not so good dirt road on the way from sport and recreation center "Preslica" on the Preslica hill and village Okolišta to the Gostilj peak and village Boljanić. The entrance in this private resort is from the main road.

    This is the first farm of fallow deer in Republika Srpska. Host property is Mr. Dragan Vasiljevic. He say that he got this idea by visiting his friends farm somewhere in Scandinavia. It took about two years to realize his idea. He found the perfect location for your venture on twenty acres land below the top Gostilj. It was his idea started several years ago, and now the property has all necessary infrastructure for breeding of wild animals. The deers was coming from Bugojno in central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today farm have about 30 deers. In planning is building of accommodation complex for visitors.

    Tourism services including possibility of observing, photographing and feeding deer from a watchtower, then conversation with the employee about the creation of farms, lifestyle deer, their nutrition etc.
    I recommend to reserve this visit to the local tourism office if you don't know anyone locals.

    Note that if you wont to enter to farm you need to call the workers from simple gate. You will be first welcoming by large Saint Bernard called Barney. Do not fear him, he is very cuddly and gentle.

    I visit this place for the first time during photo outdoor camp in 2012 and this place is interesting photo safari.

    Royal village Kotromanicevo

    by Odiseya Updated Jan 25, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    New touristic attraction of Doboj municipality is a Ethno resort "Royal village Kotromanicevo" (Serbian: "Краљевско село Котроманићево", read: "Kraljevsko selo Kotromanićevo").

    Inspired by architecture of 19 centuries with some modern twist of artistic presentation of the medieval Bosnian kingdom. You can see here that locals love ethnology. With a multitude of details collected in this area, replicas of medieval objects, with the use of natural materials in the construction, you have the impression that you're back in time.

    This is not a rare place in Bosnia and Herzegovina (including the Balkans) where you can enjoy modern amenities tailored quaint architecture. I mentioned several important buildings in the complex:
    - National Cuisine Restaurant "Royal Water" is located in the central entrance building with a donjon tower;
    - De Lux wooden houses in the old medieval form of a contemporary log cabin equipped with a capacity of 15 beds;
    - piazza with local handicrafts and local organic products;
    - children playground, mills and other entertainment facilities;
    - Lake with wooden bridge;
    - space design to attract artist on designed art colonies,
    - barbecue and camping place, etc.

    Special attraction is a river call Veličanka with rich fish stocks and many organized cultural events such as organization chivalrous tournaments and medieval dinner or catching up with the local hunting associations and gatherings. As well weddings, birthdays or holidays celebrations.

    The hosts took care to visitors and offers an attractive day trips and activities for the whole family. I would particularly mention trips to the pristine nature hilly regions Vučjak as well as visits to medieval fortresses in the environment (Doboj, Modrica, Maglaj, Tesanj, Slavonski Brod). The complex is almost photo-safari. And you can be photographed in costume princess and knights. Enabled services and providing relaxation massage in your room.
    The latest in their offer and boating on the river Velicanka.
    Within the complex are a small sports fields are ideal for football or volleyball.

    In main building - restaurant you can enjoy in flavors of traditional foods and drinks of Doboj area (gruel or traditional tzitzvara, honey brandy, corn bread, dry cottage cheese etc.). Menu is bilingual and you wouldn't have a problem to order. On the main entrance you are welcomed by local night and you enter in two part spacious room with wooden furniture with central fire place. Lots of ethnological items and artistic item inspired by local culture.

    If you wont to enjoy in complex ethnological outdoor exhibit and spend some quiet time or if you are just curious then, I believe, this is a place for you.

    The complex is for sure a off beaten path for many locals too. It is located on M17 main road from (Bosanski) Brod on way to Sarajevo via Doboj. It is about 20 km from Doboj and 45 km from Croatian border.
