Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, Sarajevo, 1986

Favorite thing: The Serbian Orthodox Cathedral is located in the city center of Sarajevo. Built in the 1860's, it is also called the "New Serbian Orthodox Church" to distinguish it from the Old Serbian Orthodox Church in Bascarsija.

Bobsled run on Mt. Trebevic

Favorite thing: I am a Winter Olympics junkie. I must have watched almost every 1984 Olympic event on TV. So for me, two years later in 1986, it was very exciting to be in the city where these Olympics were held.

This is the bobsled run on Mt. Trebevic as it looked in 1986. Most Olympic facilities have been destroyed by the war. The bobsled run now starts in Republika Srpska and ends in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, Sarajevo, 1986

Favorite thing: Based on news reports of the events in Sarajevo in 1992-95, it is easy to picture a city divided. On our trip to Sarajevo in 1986, we saw a Serbian Orthodox church next to a Muslim mosque next to a Catholic cathedral next to a Jewish Synagogue. Not divided.

Bascarsija (Old Town) Sarajevo - Before the War

Bascarsija, Sarajevo, 1986

Favorite thing: Bascarsija was a bustling center of activity in Sarajevo, with wonderful small shops where local merchants sold their wares. So many people busily making their purchases - in 1986 no one suspected what would happen in a few years.

The Old Town Center was heavily damaged during the war.

Ascenah Synagogue, Sarajevo, 1986

Favorite thing: The Ascenah Synagogue (Jewish) can be seen through the trees in this picture. An imposing structure, this synagogue was built in 1902 in the Moorish Style on the left bank of the River Miljacka in Sarajevo. It was heavily damaged during the war.

Downtown Sarajevo before the war

Sarajevo, 1986

Favorite thing: This is an example of the beautiful architecture in prewar Sarajevo. My slides and photos are 18 years old and many were not labeled. I am still trying to identify buildings. If you can help with this one, please send me a note. Did this survive the war?

Favorite thing: I

Fondest memory: was in Sarajevo a couple of years ago, while living in Zenica.
Me and a friend thought it would be great fun to go to see a football match in Sarajevo so we went to see Bosnia- hercegovina- Greece.
We went a long way uphill because the bus couldnt go all the way due to rain and mud. So we had to leave the bus and climb up the muddy hills until we arrived to the stadium. I was covered in mud due to my incapability to stay on my feet.
It was raining the whole match and Bosnia lost !
But it was still a nice experience after all :-)

Lazy adventurers go skiing at Jahorina

Favorite thing: Winter Olympics of 1984 were held in Sarajevo, many apartment buildings in the city were built for accommodation of sportsmen, and were later turned into regular apartment buildings.
Jahorina was one of the sites where competitions were held, and today it is interesting destination for adventurers. Facilities are being renovated, and even some new hotels are being built.

Fondest memory: The most enjoyable part of skiing at Jahorina is sitting down at one of many small bars on slopes and enjoying great food & drinks at very reasonable prices

Panorama grada

Favorite thing: Skup sitnih, ne uvijek najbitnijih, stvari koje se zovu - pravi zivot:
Malo posao, malo zabava,
malo radost, malo tuga,
malo arhitektura, malo priroda,
malo otpor a malo inat,
malo mirisi a malo ukusi.

Sve skupa
mnogo duse, ljudske topline i gordosti!

Fondest memory: Djetinjstvo, mladost, izlasci, djevojke, muzika, "Nadrealisti", sport, skijanje na Bjeasnici, Olimpijada 84, KK Bosna sampion, R`n`R, "New Primitives" image (oblacenje pred prvi koncert Elvisa), kinematografija, ASU, "Audicija", CDA koncerti, "Sloga", ...

Ali i
cetnicke barikade, agresija, snajperi, opsada, ubijane civila, ubijanje djece, granatiranje porodilista, nadljudski otpor, necuvena herojstva, unistavanje svega i svacega sto simbolizira grad, civilizaciju, zajednistvo, kulturu,

Ali (opet ) i
oslobodjenje, napredak, izgradnja, renoviranje, radjanje neke nove djecice, zasad novih stabala, uredjenje parkova, sklapanje novih prijateljstava, ...

Fondest memory: against what everything thinks Sarajevo is not a fallen city. Many friends told me when they knew about my trip to Bosnia: 'are you insane?','you are going to war?'. Well, forget about all that. War is past, and Sarajevo is present. The people inside is present and they are definitely thinking on reconstruction, on future. They don t look back, looking back is painful, but they have that future. Now, if you want to see ruins, you can. But if you can explore the soul of Sarajevo you will find hope, and a very charming city.
