Like many places in Sarajevo, the artisans working here are so outgoing and friendly. If only the majority of shops were like this in Europe I'd probably be completely loaded down with souvenirs and art. I really enjoy watching them work

What to pay: I didn't haggle much, only asked to get a small knick-nac thrown in for free with my purchase.

Sarajevo artisans at work: forget the tourist t-shirts

i'll take one of everything - please

I'm kicking myself for not going on a no-holds-bar shopping spree and just mailing all the things back via FedEx. Truly, Sarajevo had the most to offer in terms of art, metal & wood engravings, clothes and knick-nacks (so that's what they did with all those bullet casings). I even got pulled into a carpet shop, just like how I envision shopping in Turkey would be. There are some really fine craftsmen (and ladies) here. My copper engraved plate will have to suffice until my next trip.

What to buy: Engravings
Carpets
Shoes
Leather goods

A moderm supermarket where you can find all you may need. Take the tram from the old town or take an hour of educational walk from the same along Milijacka. Prices are cheaper than western Europe and credit cards are accepted. Also it would be an opportunity to see the Bosnian metropolites. Sales people shockingly don't speak English enough but you can make your way through. If you are in Sarajevo more than couple of days you may find many of your favorit brands here. Its a newly-built red-colored large building.

Bezistan (web-pic)

Bezistan or covered market is an Ottoman arrangement and sometimes built underneath a mosque. This also serves as a source of income for the mosque other than voluntary donation. Almost all the mosques built centuries ago have this kind of arrangement.

Misc.: Turkish souvenirs in the old town 3

This copper-work also traces the link of Turkish influence. Some shops here are doing business for generations and though the shops are full, there is'n enough sale I guess. So, buy some souvenirs if you wanna help them carrying on this business and preserving this old tradition of business in the old town.

Strolling through the old town gives you a taste of colorful oriental products. These carpets which are supposedly imported from Turkey / Iran gives a special feel in this ally. Unless you really wanna spend money or have a direct flight back home, this is not your cup of tea. But taking phots and walking around is free!

the storefront

It's a fun little shop in the middle of the market area, filled with colorful hats, clothes and bags, owned by a enthusiastic lady who makes most of them. In the evening, the employees play the piano and drink coffee, and if you speak Bosnian they're happy to chat with you.

What to pay: It's a bit on the expensive side (geared towards tourists), but the clothes and hats are mostly handpainted and you can frequently see the shop owner making them in front of the shop.

Old Town Bargains

What to buy: If you are a shopping addict like me (I actually bring an empty bad to take home all of my souvenirs in.) I went crazy in the old town and wanted to bring home everything in sight. Most importantly, I wanted a coffee set. I wanted one the last time I was there, but didn’t have the money or the space to bring it back in. What I would caution, however, is that if you do want to buy something in the old town you should definitely shop around. I found five different prices for the copper coffee set I wanted and had I gone with the first offer I would have paid nearly $50 for one. I ended up paying about $25. Don’t be afraid to try to talk them down either. I have learned that when buying something off the street you should always bargain and never accept the first offer.

What to pay: You can expect to spend anything from $2 or $3 for a small copper teapot or spoon to over $200 for a Turkish rug.

Pijaca, Sarajevo, 1986

The open air pijaca is a popular and busy place where residents shop for food. The food purchased in these markets was so much more delicious than the food we would buy in our huge supermarkets in America.
