The history of the domed Brusa Bezistan complex dates back to the Ottoman era, when it was built as a covered market place. During the recent war it was heavily damaged, but has been restored lately.
Nowadays the building is part of the Sarajevo Museum and serves as the City Museum. On display are all sorts of items related to the city history from antiquity to the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Among other things the cups which Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sofia drank from in Sarajevo before they were shot.
As the admission was only 2 KM, we had a quick look at the museum, which also gives the chance to see the inside of the Brusa Bezistan.
The Brusa Bezistan can be recognised by its 6 large domes. It is located right in the heart of Sarajevo's historic old town (Bascarsija).
Address: Brusa Bezistan, Barscarsija, Sarajevo
This city museum is a small place which will keep you busy for at least 30 minutes – maybe an hour if you’re slow. However, it is right in the middle of the Ottoman quarter and only cost 4km so just go in while you’re passing.
Very useful information and exhibits. Before I arrived I knew something of the city’s recent history, but didn’t know it was important even back in neolithic times. Learning all the time…
Many of the objects in the museum can be seen in the "virtual museum" gallery on its website. However, I can assure you that going to Sarajevo to see them is more fun.
Brusa Bezistan is an interesting old structure of which it can sometimes be rather difficult to get pictures of, thanks to the explosion of small shops selling tourist souvenirs. It is a smaller Bezistan (a sort of Ottoman-era shopping mall) than the main one that is connected with the entire Gazi-Husrev complex, and today it doesn’t fulfill its original role, having been converted to a city museum. The small, square structure, with its six copper roofs, was built in the 1560s and is called Brusa after the Turkish city of Bursa, from which goods would arrive to be sold in this Bezistan.
Brusa Bezistan comes from Turkish word meaning Clothing market. It was built in 1551 in Ottoman times. The roof consists of 6 large and 2 small domes. Now the city museum.
