City Hall, Sarajevo
City Hall is one of the most distinctive buildings in Sarajevo, built in the Moorish style between 1892 and 1894. In 1949, the building was turned into the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina but during the Siege of Sarajevo in August 1992 the building was shelled and most of the books were burned. The building is still under resconstruction
This predominantly pseudo-Moorish expression monument was constructed at the end of the 20th, and handed over to the City Authority. From 1949, the building was handed over to the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over the time, it has accumulated about 3 million library items.
The intentional destruction of Vijenica, in summer of 1992, by gunners occupying the hills surrounding Sarajevo represents one of the most tragic consequences of the Bosnian Civil War, 1992-1995.
Its value as an architectural monument and the content of its priceless collections had been recognized for many years.
To bring back to life Vijecnica and to reconstitute its precious manuscripts and other documentary records represents not only architectural, professional and financial challenge but also will make valuable contribution to the fruitful dialogue between various civilisations which have left their traces in this country.
At least the restoration work of the building will finish next year.
City Hall was where Franz Ferdinand travelled from in 1914 on the day he was shot. Today it is being restored after a fire in the library which destroyed many books,.Many countries and cities are helping to restore the place.
The City hall is destroyed, the windows are covered by wood. It is sad, because it had to be an impressive building. But still it has a spirit and i am sure it will be repaired soon.
Two architects worked on the project, Alexandar Wittek was sent to Cairo to study islamic architecture and arts. The model is supposed to be Hassan II. mosque. Later he died in Graz and the hall was completed by architect Ciril Ivekovic in 1894. The construction started 1892.
Sadly, the building was burnt down 24th and 25th August 1992.
The city market hall in the main street is spotless clean , selling fresh foods like cheese and meat.
