There are many remnants of the castles and fortress all over B&H. Most of them have been destroyed in the past centuries, likewise in the recently passed war. When visiting it, take good care if you see sign PAZI MINE, it is warning for the mines.

    Medjugorje...Religious Shrine or Tourist Trap?

  • Climbing Apparition Hill - Bosnia and Herzegovina
    Climbing Apparition Hill

In the 1980's six children saw apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the small town of Medjugorje. Now every year hundreds of thousands of Catholics make the pilgrimage to this location, even though the Catholic Church has not sanctioned the apparitions. I am Catholic and was very moved when I visited Fatama (in Portugal) so I had to visit Medjugorje. It was an interesting place I am glad I went, but well…I wanted to believe but some of the facts are disturbing….

First of all, about 85% of the people in Bosnia are Serbian Orthodox or Muslim. Bosnia has a long history of ethnic cleansing based on religion.

Before the Apparitions Medjugorje was a very isolated small town located in the Western Part of Bosnia, next to the Catholic Country of Croatia…in an area that many of the Croatians feel is their own. Croatians say that this area is the “stomach” of Croatia and should be returned.

Since the Apparitions the economy of Medjugorje is thriving and its position as a Catholic area seems very secure. The “visionaries” will meet with you, allow you to stay in their home and even speak to the Virgin Mary in front of you.

Keep your mind open when you visit...maybe your experience will be different than mine.

I do know people who went to Medjugorje on a religious pilgrimage had life altering experience. So maybe the difference is that I went as a tourist and was unable to find the right people or group to join in with.

For those of you who do go be sure to bring a good pair of hiking boots and your rosary beads and hike up the hill doing the stations of the cross. This is the only area where I really felt a special presence. It was amazing to watch women hiking up a hill filled with sharp rock in their bear feet. The amount of devotion that must take is awe inspiring.

I found Fatama Portugal to be much more inspiring

The worst traps are those mined ones (see: dangers). Generally - do not expect too much. And always (in hotels, private accomodation) make sure about the price in advance.

    .
Don't be surprised seeing many destroyed, burnt out and empty houses and many burnt out cars by the road. And don't be afraid like me haha - it's over.

  • If you don't have KM (Konvertible Mark) the people will take EURO without problems.

But be careful. Some want more from you.

Don't get in. Say the price you want to pay.

In all Banks. The EURO is accepted and they will give you the fixed rate

    1 € = 1,95583 KM.

  • In many countries the taxi mafia is active,
If they see a tourist they see the dollars and try to cheat you.

So don't be naiv, Get a feeling for the right price by asking other people.

Always ask for the price before you get off.

Always look what the driver does if he uses the taxameter.

If you drive by day be sure that he doesn't use the night tarif.

Be careful that the taxameter is not tuned.

Pay and try to do better next time!

    Use publc transport!

I know there's lots of warnings about this. Buth there are bombed out villages all over the country. Don't be tempted to explore until you are sure the landmines have been cleared.

You can only hope that the occupants got away first
