The castles and fortress

by croisbeauty

There are many remnants of the castles and fortress all over B&H. Most of them have been destroyed in the past centuries, likewise in the recently passed war. When visiting them, take good care if you see the sign PAZI MINE, it is warning for the mines. The best is if acompaigned by the locals, they know how to save you from possible troubles.

Passport/Border Crossing Croatia

by MichaelFalk1969

This is not a tourist trap but rather a friendly reminder: As many combine a Bosnia trip with a vist to Croatia/Damatia, keep in mind that the Dalamtian coastline is interrupted by a tiny piece of Bosnia, the sea resort Neum. So when you travel Mostar via Neum to Dubrovnik, you will have multiple border crossings and passport controls - keep your passport always at hand and not in your luggage.

Taxi mafia

by Tobias_Plieninger

In many countries the taxi mafia is active,If they see a tourist they see the dollars and try to cheat you.So don't be naiv, Get a feeling for the right price by asking other people.Always ask for the price before you get off.Always look what the driver does if he uses the taxameter. If you drive by day be sure that he doesn't use the night tarif.Be careful that the taxameter is not tuned. Pay and try to do better next time! Use publc transport!

Land mines

by Kardrew

I know there's lots of warnings about this. Buth there are bombed out villages all over the country. Don't be tempted to explore until you are sure the landmines have been cleared. You can only hope that the occupants got away first

Currency

by Tobias_Plieninger

If you don't have KM (Konvertible Mark) the people will take EURO without problems. But be careful. Some want more from you. Don't get in. Say the price you want to pay. In all Banks. The EURO is accepted and they will give you the fixed rate1 € = 1,95583 KM.

Medjugorje...Religious Shrine or Tourist Trap?

by tampa_shawn

In the 1980's six children saw apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the small town of Medjugorje. Now every year hundreds of thousands of Catholics make the pilgrimage to this location, even though the Catholic Church has not sanctioned the apparitions. I am Catholic and was very moved when I visited Fatama (in Portugal) so I had to visit Medjugorje. It was an interesting place I am glad I went, but well…I wanted to believe but some of the facts are disturbing…. First of all, about 85% of the people in Bosnia are Serbian Orthodox or Muslim. Bosnia has a long history of ethnic cleansing based on religion. Before the Apparitions Medjugorje was a very isolated small town located in the Western Part of Bosnia, next to the Catholic Country of Croatia…in an area that many of the Croatians feel is their own. Croatians say that this area is the “stomach” of Croatia and should be returned. Since the...

The worst traps are those...

by Marcin75

The worst traps are those mined ones (see: dangers). Generally - do not expect too much. And always (in hotels, private accomodation) make sure about the price in advance.
