Tuzla, city in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, located on a branch of the Spreca River, at the western foot of the Majevica mountain range. Nearby are stone quarries, saltworks, plum orchards, and mineral springs. A road and rail hub, Tuzla is the center of a lignite, oil, and gas region.
Population 121,717 (1991).
Language name BOSNIAN
Population 4,000,000 in Bosnia-Herzegovina (1995).

What I love the most in Tuzla is the time of Ramadan (Muslim holy month), when all the bakeries make special kind of pita bread with black seeds on top (choorookot, I don't know what they are called in English) and the whole downtown smells. I especially love it when it is almost time to eat after a day of fasting, the night is slowly falling, the smell of the hot bread in the air, people rushing homes to bring bread in time for eftar(breaking the fast) and then the call to prayer from at least five different mosques that you can hear downtown, close to the intersection called Square. Then the children rush into the house yelling: 'It's time, it's time, the lights are on on the minaret, usually competing who is going to see the lights first.' Leave a Comment

go to the Korzo, or equivilant of downtown. During the Summer, it is alive late into the night. Street cafe's, music, and vibrant youth pack the traffic free streets.
I spent many sleepless nights in Tuzla due to jetlag, and one thing that I miss is the sound of the 'hodga' calling faithful Muslims to pray early in the morning when its still dark out. When I did sleep, however, it did not wake me up! Leave a Comment
