DRINK BEER!

Hey that's my beer butthead!

Once you get off the base you can indulge. Beer drinking is the past time of choice.

There are a few decent beers around here that are relatively cheap. The local swill is called Tuzlanski Pilsner. I would give it a miss if I were you, not so good. Lasko from Slovenia is very good as is Ojusko from Croatia.

This is where some of the 7K muslim men and boys were killed. The black stains on the walls and ceilings are what's left of the blood and tissue that the serbs attempted to hide.

read ENDGAME, an excellent book on this
and BALKAN GHOSTS which was written before the war.

Korzo - Tuzla's main walking street...
Tuzla's main walking street is a lively bustling always-populated shopping and eating area, with its beginning at the Statues of two famous Tuzlans: Ismet Mujezinovic the Painter and Mesa Selimovic the Writer (translated even into English, 'The Dervish and the death')... The Other End's at the Kapija site where 70 teenagers were killed by a mortar.

Here's a must see: sacral objects in Tuzla. The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Apostles Saint Peter and Paul, the Orthodox Cathedral, and about twenty something churches, the loveliest being the one in the hills, Dzindicka dzamija (Dzindi's mosque).
Interesting because of the following: the Franciscan Monastery has lovely fresques, a bell tower (you can nicely ask the guardian or a monk to let you up so you can see the whole of Tuzla), the Orthodox cathedral has an interesting art collection (and the english-speaking Father Nicholas is always willing to depict everything to you), while the mosques also have interesting architecture, the Dzindi's being the oldest wooden one, while the one on the main Square, for example, attracts souvenir sellers and shopkeepers from the nearby shops... New one, though.

While in Tuzla, you should definitely go out to Korzo if you are visiting during the summer. This is a pedestrian area downtown, full of cafes and full of people in the summer. A lot of the times there is a traditional Korziada going on that dates back into the fifties and has been revived in the early nineties. This is a festivity when people and their families all go out to Korzo, there is live music, free food and drinks, corn on the kob, popcorn and sometimes even fireworks. It usually happens on fridays but you have to hear the announcment since it does not have a regular schedule.
Also, try to get out of Tuzla a bit and visit places like the lake Modrac and the Gradina fortress in Srebrenik. The two sides of the lake are very different. One is still completely natural and there is a well of mineral water where you can just fill your bottle for free. This is the Kiseljak side.
On the Lukavac side, it has been developed and there is a number of restaurants, cafes and night clubs, which are open much later in the night then any of the cafes in Tuzla. I would not recommend actually swimming in the lake.
Also, as I said, visit the fortress. It is near a town called Srebrenik close to Tuzla and it's a ruin of the old turkish fortress. The picture above is the picture of it.
Also, make sure to pay the respects to the graves of the victims of the bombing of May 25. 1995. Anyone can tell you how to get there. This is very important to the people of Tuzla since 73 of Tuzla's youth were killed by a Serbian shell in downtown and if you are ever in Tuzla on that day, know that there will be a commemoration at the place where it happened in the very center of Tuzla.

Summer University and Tuzla Wave
Summer University is actually a period of about a month or so during the summer when a lot of professors from around the world come and give crash courses on different topics. There are usually people attending from all round the world as well. A good way to get to Tuzla.

- TUZLA WAVE is a music festival with things like music marathons and stuff like that. A lot of people come and there are actually more activities than just playing. More information on the website bellow

If you're ever near the neighberhood of Slatina, find some roads leading up into the south hills. If you keep climbing south you'll find yourself in a small villiage where you can take a quick break, and then head back.
This will provide a great view of the city, as well as a good look at the beautiful countryside.

Typical view of one of the streets, people are out and drinking coffee and just hanging out with their friends. And it's like this all day, everyday.
