Describe The Shop - virtually infront almost every tavern in Melnik you will see a table of wines to be sold :)
The reason is taht Melnik is famouse for its wines.
The tavern behind the bottles is owned by Ilia Gurchev, who is also behind the bottles :) He was teasing me that I should not take a picture of him because he hadn't fixed his hair.
What to buy: I was told that altough prices vary the best wines are not the least or the most expensive but the middle range.
If you pay about BGN 6 per 2 l you should get a decent wine.
What to pay: about BGN 6 per 2 l
- Wine Tasting
At the wineries and the Kordopulov house you buy the wines. In town a bottle of plonk is 2 lv a better wine is 5 lv. For 12 lv you can buy the Wine map Bulgaria to get your information on the wines (see: www.melnikwine.bg)
stalls on the streets: Jam of green figs and/or pumpkins
What to buy: Jam of green figs and/or pumpkins: both of them are really delicious; the jam of pumpkins is called rachel; you may try jam of green figs with home-made yoghurt.
I must warn you: do not try to eat the whole jam... it is really delicious but you may get sick... I've already eaten them and that's why there is no picture in this tip...
a small jam-jar costs 3lv, the bigger one - 5lv
- Food and Dining
Everywhere: Red wine, red wine
Almost all houses have their own wine cellar. It is situated in inside the sand rocks that surround this small town. Some of them offer wine tasting and most of them are really good in wine making. On the picture we are inside one of these cellars. This one keeps between 250 and 300 tons of wine now.
What to buy: The red wine wine of this region is really thick and dark red. It is also kinda heavy but very tasteful.
What to pay: Between 3 and 6 Euro.
