The most convinient way to reach Burgas (Area) is a charter flight to Burgas Airport. Only in Summer time you can reach this airport from a lot of european Destinations. Bourgas Airport is situated in a picturesque bay on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast, 10 km north-east of the town of Bourgas.
From the Airport is a public bus Nr. 15 running to the city center, and also buses are going on the black sea cost north to Direction Varna. Be minimum two hours before departure of your flight at the airport, because it is very busy at check-In and at Passport Control!

Burgas airport is used mostly by charter flights bringing package holiday makers to the nearby resort of Sunny Beach.
It's also used by some major European low cost airlines.
In the airport I could see the origins and destinations of many flighs. Many destinations were from Eastern Europe itself: Budapest, Bratislava, Minsk. Lots of flights were from Sweden. This area of Bulgaria seems to be very popular among Swedish holiday makers. I saw many of them in Burgas and in bus rides between Burgas and Nesebur (complaining and moaning to the bus staff as it's usual among them) LOL
The farthest destinations of these airport were probably Lisbon and Oporto. I came from Lisbon and it took me 5 hours to travel. It was a charter done by Bulgaria Air. Normally these kind of flights are included in a package with hotel, but as I wanted to travel freely through Bulgaria for 15 days rather than staying 7 days like touristy cattle in Sunny Beach, I got a special ticket only for the flight. It wasn't much cheaper than buying a package though.
These charter flights are currently the only direct flights between Portugal and Bulgaria.
After collecting my luggage, some attendants from the Portuguese travel agent Abreu were waiting for the passengers to take them to resorts. They were Bulgarian girls and some spoke Portuguese fluently. What a surprise! They gave me some basic informations about the country and, as I wasn't heading to Sunny Beach, I one of them gave me a lift to Burgas in her car.

Although thousands of holiday-makers arrive at Burgas Airport on charter flights every summer on their way to the Black Sea coast, hardly any scheduled services use the airport. There isn't even a flight to Sofia. You'll have to travel along the coast to Varna if you want to fly to the capital. But the airport has been busy in recent months, with US military aircraft touching down on their way to or from Iraq.

Transport connections are excellent with a direct train and a highway to Sofia. Bourgas /Sarafovo/ Airport is just outside the city.

Burgas claims to have Bulgaria's most attractive railway station. Of course, it's a claim that can be easily believed if all you know is the cavernous monstrosity of Sofia's main station. But it has to be said that Burgas station, after its extensive and expensive renovation, does indeed look attractive. Catch it in the right light and you may even think it could be the former king's summer residence at the Black Sea.

Burgas Train Station is in the middle of the city center. You can start from here to west direction Sofia with some trains. Train to Sofia is arround 15 Lewa One way and takes 6-7 hours.

There are several direct trains a day to/from Sofia. There are two lines that connect Sofia and Bourgas: One reuns between the mountains and is more picturesque. It goes through Koprivshtitsa, Karlovo, Kazanluk, Sliven, Karnobat and other smaller places.
The other runs through Pazardjik, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Yambol, Karnobat.
During the floodings last year, the railroads were furhter damaged and the trains often have delays half to one hour. However, they are cheaper than buses. The return tickets come out cheaper and are valid for one month. The return tickets to smaller places are valid for 3 days.
I think that Burgas' trainstation is the most beautiful in Bulgaria.

I'm not really one for making comparisons between places but I do get the impression that Varna and Bourgas maintain a friendly rivalry and what one has the other wants to emulate and perhaps even better. One case in point is their respective railway stations which are almost identical twins, having been built by the same architects. I'm certainly not going to make any value judgement on which is the prettier but suffice it to say that both are equally welcoming.
Bourgas's Central Station is pretty easy to find being just off the city centre on the main thorofare of Blvd Knyaz Al. Batenberg (next door to the bus station and the port offices) and is connected to to Bulgaria's mainline rail network via the junction at Karnobat. There are 7 daily services to and from Sofia with an express journey time of about 6 and a half hours.
And just as an aside I should mention that the ticket seller here was definitely the most helpful ensuring that I had a reservation and double-checking that I knew I had to change trains at Karnobat for my journey back to Varna. Oh, and not to forget the guy who sold me my beer from one of the refreshment stalls who made sure I got a nice cold one!! Yep, Cheers! Both :)
Phone number is for info (0500 to 1830) and website is the excellent Bulgarian National Railway which has an "English" option.
