Situated on a small peninsula (in the immediate vicinity of the large seaside resort of Sunny Beach), one of the oldest towns in Europe still exudes the spirit of different ages and peoples - Thracians, Hellenes, Romans, Slavs, Byzantines and Bulgarians.
Nessebur's greatest wealth are its many churches: the Old Bishop's Residence in an early Byzantine style (4th-5th c.), the New Bishops Residence (St. Stefan), containing valuable 12-th century murals, the Christ Pantocrator and Aliturgetos churches (13-th -14th c.).
Nessebur's National Revival houses with stone foundations and broad wooden eaves, overhanging narrow cobbled lanes leading right into the sea, are also remarkably beautiful.

When they get enough people standing round which isn't long. The guys at the beach take you out on this inflatable banana boat.
Once hooked up to there speed boat its off to brave the Ocean. When your out and away from the beach traveling really fast the driver on the speed boat will turn sharply so everyone on the Banana boat falls into the Sea.
Then we all clamper back on and race back to the beach. Excellent fun....!

The Christ Pantocrator Church was erected during the 13th & 14th centuries. The richest decortaion is in the eastern fascade.
The church located inside the old city of Nesebur is now a small museum. Inside you can purchase replica of icnos and other souveniors. Entrance is free.

There are numerous ruins of old churches in Nessebar. Once there was 80 churches and lot's of them can still be seen - most of them in ruins.
If you're interested in details about the ruins you can buy a Nessebar guide in some local souvenir shop, and check them one by one. For me it was just too hot day to do this.

I decided to to just take a walk around the city. You can see some of the beautiful bulgarian houses from the 18th century. Architecture is very pretty. Walking around the city also gives you a better idea of how the people live in general.

The ruins left from the middle ages are a great activity for everybody who likes to go sightseeing. I really think that contrast of old ruins with the newly styled buildings, brings the town a great uniquiness. The ruins are spread around the downtown area and some of them are turned in to restaurants.

It is still possible to escape the throngs of tourists and discover the quiet back streets of Nessebar's old town.
The town provides a maze of narrow streets between traditional houses and ancient churches, which are practically free from traffic.

As can be seen from the photograph, many of the houses in Nessebar, (and other Bulgarian villages too), are built in this characteristic style.
The lower floors are built from stone while the upper floors are built from wood.
The reasoning behind this is that food is stored downstairs, kept cool because of the stone walls, while the inhabitants live on the upper floors.

The entrance to Nesebur is via a narrow gateway in the fortress wall that once encircled the town. The earliest foundations were laid by the Thracians 2,800 years ago, and later were fortified by Hellenes and Byzantines.
