Religion

by hekate

As I already said in my tip for the celebrating of name days in Bulgaria, the majority of the Bulgarians claim to be Orthodox Christians. This is proven by the official statistics showing the following distribution (as per the CIA World factbook):- Bulgarian Orthodox 82.6%, - Muslim 12.2%, - other Christian 1.2%, - other 4ut some of these people claiming to be Orthodox Christians haven’t set their foot in a church for the last couple of months or even years - actually I guess not more than 60% out of these 82.6% are true Orthodox Christians, the rest are more or less atheists. The explanation I have for myself is a bit odd and probably not everybody would agree with it but here it is: During the time of the communist regime people were pushed to be atheists. After all, religion (Christian or Muslim, religion as a whole) what proclaimed as opium for the masses. People who cared for their...

Brief Bulgarian History - Part II

by hekate

The Third Bulgarian Kingdom (1878 – 1945)As a result of the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation (1877-1878) the Bulgarian State was restored, but it included only a small part of the Bulgarian lands. The Bulgarian people reacted against the decision of the Berlin Congress with the Kresna-Razlog uprising (1878-1879), accomplishment of the unification of Eastern Rumelia and the Principality of Bulgaria (1885) and organized the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie uprising (1903). Prince Ferdinand Saxe-Coburg-Gotha proclaimed Bulgaria independent and himself the tsar. Bulgaria, together with Serbia and Greece, was victorious in the Balkan War (1912-1913) against Turkey for the liberation of Thrace and Macedonia, but in the Inter-Allies War (1913) it was defeated by its former allies who tore out territories inhabited by Bulgarians. Bulgaria's participation in the World War I on the side of the Central Powers...

The turkish terror

by desert_princess

My grand grand mother Maria came from Macedonia by the time she was only 6 years old. She escaped the land of Strumitza with her mother Denitza and her whole family to seek refuge from the turkish terror . Walking only by night to avoid being massacred , she was seeing on both sides of the road people being stuck on wooden pylons like scarecrows - some of them still alive and moaning..... They flew as far as possible - crossed the whole land , passed the Balkans ,to settle in its most nothern part - the Pleven region , by the Danube river.NEVER FORGET HISTORY!!!! IT COULD COME BACK AT ANY TIME.......

Bulgarian language uses the cyrillic alphabet, virtually the same as is used in Russia. While it is no substitute for Bulgarian, Russian words are nonetheless pretty similar and will help you in Bulgaria.

PAGAN CULTS - The Legend of Orpheus

by desert_princess

The Great singer Orpheus, son of the river god Oeagrus and the muse Calliope sang songs with his lyre that was a gift from Apollo. The magic of his music tamed the wild beasts and the rocks and valleys repeated his magic melodies. Orpheus's songs charmed all , but no one felt great pleasure than the beautiful nymph Eurydice - the wife of the singer. For long hours she listened fascinated by his voice and lyre.Even the gods envied the happy couple. One unfortunate day, while taking a walk through a flower covered meadow, Eurydice was biiten by a viper and until the sunset came she left this world. The heart-broken Orpheus went on a fearful journey to the underground kingdom to convince Hades to give him back his beloved. He went down tne path which end ended into darkness. Going down into the dark depths Orpheus heard screams and moaning of deadly pain. His blood ran cold but as he...

East

by barryg23

This was my first trip to Eastern Europe and the gap in living standards between Bulgaria and Ireland was rather apparent. Growing up in a Western European country there are certain things you just take for granted, and while you often read about what life is like in other countries, it is very different to experience it first hand. Learning to ski. One of the most exhilerating sports i've done - it seems very difficult at first but after a day or two most of us picked it up. By the end of the week we all wanted to stay longer.

Beaches

by swetluska

We stayed in Balchik and the beaches there are not the best ones, because it is mainly a harbour. Beaches in Albena are full of ugly beatles, so if you stay somewhere in the area we did, good idea is to go to Golden sands or Varna.

Persistent shop assistants and unbelievable people

by swetluska

HEH....IT´S NOT MY FAVOURITE THING AT ALL BUT I WAS NOT SURE WHERE TO PUT THIS :-)As almost every girl or woman, I love shopping. In Bulgaria especially clothes is cheap, but even then I didn´t buy anything...because of the shop assistants. It drives me mad, when I enter the shop and the person there jump up from the chair and follows every single step I take. In such a situation I usually turn and leave....hope you have better nerves! :-)Another thing I´m not able to understand is peoples´ behaviour on the beaches. There can be 2 km of free space, but they will put all their stuff just 20 cm from your towel. And for sure they will smoke and they will smoke A LOT, especially when you hate smell of the cigarettes!

Brief Bulgarian History

by hekate

In order to explain the gaps in the Bulgarian rulers tip and to give you an idea about the main events in the Bulgarian history I had found info on the net that overlaps with the history lessons I had at school. So here it is for you to read :)The history of Bulgaria separates into four periods: The First Bulgarian Kingdom(681 – 1018 AD)The Bulgarian State was founded in 681 by khan Asparouh as a leader of a union of the Slavs and the Proto-Bulgarians in their struggle against Byzantium. The following period between the 8th and the 10th centuries brought the political rise and territorial expansion.Boris I Mihail (852-889) converted the Bulgarians to Christianity and adopted the Slavonic script created by Constantine Cyril the Philosopher and his brother Methodius. Simeon the Great (893-927) conquered new lands and expanded the territory of Bulgaria to the Black Sea, the Aegean and the...
