The Varna Museum

by Braveheart_TR

The Varna Museum is full of treasures from all periods of the city's history, and will interest both the informed archaeologist and the casual visitor. In 1972 excavations in the Varna Necropolis revealed almost two thousand gold artefacts from about 4000 B.C. One stunning display case has the bones of a tribal leader arranged with skilfully-made jewellery and personal possessions around him. Some of the finds are displayed behind magnifying glass to reveal the complex and minute details of the craftsmanship. Some items are thought to be the oldest worked gold so far discovered. Other exhibition halls contain Greek and Roman antiquities, including some fine ceramics; icons, weapons and materials from the 19th century struggle against the Ottoman Empire.

Warm food

by ettenaj

If ordering hot food make sure you ask for it hot, apparently Bulgarians serve food up warm rather than hot as they believe it to be healthier. We only found this at a couple of places, and when you get hot chocolate ,warm, it really is not the same!!! :-(((

Bulgarian Anthem

by kalenderov

The National Anthem of Bulgaria is based on the music and lyrics of the song "Gorda Stara Planina" (Proud Stara Planina), written by Tzvetan Radoslavov (1863 - 1931) in the year 1885. He composed the song while he was on his way to the battlefield during the Serb-Bulgarian war. "Mila Rodino" (Dear Homeland) became the National Anthem in the year 1964. The lyrics were altered several times, the last time was in 1990. Dear HomelandProud Stara Planina, next to it-the Danube in blue, the sun shines on Thrace, flaming above Pirin. Chorus:Dear homeland, you are a paradise on Earth, your beauty, your wonders,oh, they are endless.Countless soldiers fellfor our beloved people, mother, give us strengthto continue their ways.

Jobbing in Bulgaria

by ger4444

Via our University here in the Netherlands there are now and then temporary jobs or traineeships offered in Bulgaria. But also there are sometimes interesting summer jobs in Bulgaria. If you are interested in working in Bulgaria the following things can be helpful to know. Ok, if you want a job, remember that the salary is low, so you only do it for the experience of course. From some friends at the Language institute here in the Netherlands, I heard that teaching English is a job that is now getting more and more popularity in Bulgaria. See the following website: www.sofiaecho.com. If you have arranged a job before entering Bulgaria, that is, you settled an agreement with an employer when you were home, you wont have a lot of problems, for your boss will do all the necessary paperwork. When you however are coming to Bulgaria without any arrangement, and finally find a job in this...

Drinks in Bulgaria

by keeper7

Don't be alarmed if you get a warm drink.Bulgarians mostly have their soft drinks, i.e, Coca Cola, Sprite & others, with no ice.You can order these drinks with ice but it's most common to have them without ice. Some Bulgarians say drink it with no ice because it's easier on the stomach.Beers are mostly served cold. Bulgaria most popular beers are "Zagorka" & "Kamanitza". Kamanitza is stronger than Zagorka. If you can try some homemade alcohol called "Rakia".

Travel Agencies

Currency (BGN)

by keeper7

The currency for Bulgaria is called the "leva". This is the BGN dollar. Coins or cents are called "stokinki". In dominations of 1,2,5,10,20, 50 & 100.The currency rate changes daily. When going to change currency to BGN, there are places mostly named "change". The usually charge a comission for the change. There are many places arround. Including in the Sofia Airport. One thing I do is get BGN out of a ATM machine. This way I get max amount of change with no problem and it is fast & convinent with no comission. When shopping mostly all places take cash. No charge card. Currency Check: http://www.xe.com/ucc/
