Discounts

by ger4444

The ISIC (International Student Identity Card) and the IYTC (International Youth Travelling Card) is in Bulgaria good for discounts of 10 to 20 percent at museums, some of the major attractions hostels and restaurants. Always inform if these cards give some discount! (these places don’t advertise the fact that cardholders get discount!) Travel agencies offer card holders also up to 50 percent off domestic flights and 10 percent off train and bus tickets. So, don’t forget to ask for discount! (they don’t advertise it neither) There is a brochure that lists all the occasions where you can get discounts, but you have to be able to read some Bulgarian, for its all in cyrilic Bulgarian language. For information of the ISIC see: www.isic.org. Both cards, ISIC and IYTC, can be issued to anyone with the correct documentation. They cost about 10 lv each and are available at the Bulgarian youth...

Culture and Nature

by ger4444

Bulgaria seems to have a warm place in the heart of the United Nations. There are at least nine sites of culture and nature listed on the list of Unesco World Heritage! These are: Pirin national Park, the Rila Monasterie, the Madara Horseman (near Shumen), the Nesebar peninsula, the Boyana curch near Sofia, the Ivanova Monastery near Ruse, the Srebarna nature reserve and the Sveshtari tomb near Silistra, and the Kazanlak Tomb in Kazanlak. Next to these highlights of Bulgarian culture and nature, there are numerous of museums and art-galleries in the country, there are around 150 monasteries – the Rila and Bachkoko monastery being the most famous – and there are numerous of churches in Bulgaria among which the Alexander Nevski Church in Sofia and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Maria the most spectacular are. And, there are lots of traces of the past visible left by the...

National Parks

by ger4444

There are 12 national parks all over Bulgaria, in which the environment – flora and fauna – is protected. The parks contain reserves where wildlife and nature is protected and where unique landscapes are preserved, such as caves or lakes. However, although some of these parks are put under the protection of Unesco, such as the Pirin national parc, and environmental groups seem to put pressure on government to keep maintaining to protect these areas, economic interest sometimes seem to win over environmental ones. In the Pirin park a huge project is now being set up to built skiing-facilities. So, hundreds of trees have been cot to build skiing lifts over there. This is not only frustrating for nature preservation, it also makes the hike through the park – that is from Bansko up to the first hizha unattractive. The most accessible and beautifull parks are the following ones: Pirin...

Internet

by ger4444

Internet is available nearly everywhere I went in Bulgaria. Smaller towns like Bansko and Koprivshitsa have acces to the web. Internet is cheap: about one lv for half an hour. The internet-cafés are always very easy to find: their names are mostly depicted in English. But also at computergame centers you can find computers with internet. Sometimes however there can be serious temporarie problems with the local provision of the internetservice. I was in Belogradchic and I had arranged with the youth-hostel in Sofia, that I would send them an e-mail, to confirm my reservation for that night., since I was planning to take the bus to Sofia that evening. But the whole day, there was no internet in Belogradchic: there was a problem with the local telecommunication tower. This can happen; so keep this in mind if you are depending on the net for vital matters!

Visa and Registration

by ger4444

People from the EU can travel for free during one month in Bulgaria. You get your visa at the airport or border. As for other countries, I don’t know about visa (except that US-travelers can also travel for free during one month) If you want to stay longer, just go to the border to the next neightboor-country and get a new visa. When you stay in Bulgaria you must know that officially registration is obligated. So, officially, you have to register at the police office. Hotels, hostals, youth-hostals and campings however will take your registration. You have to fill in a form and they will take care of the job. Now, the thing is, when you leave the country, you have to show the immigration officer the copies of all these forms the hotels etc. gave to you. I experienced this when I left from Varna. The officer said that I had to pay a huge amount of money (I think it was some 60 lv) because...

Money, money, money

The Bulgarian leva is at the moment of writing 0, 58 eurocents. Leva is always shortened to lv or BGN. The leva is divided in hundred sto- (100) tinki. Its easy if you are from germany or Holland, for one leva equals one DM or Dutch Gulden. How to get the leva’s? There are ATM’s in all the big towns. In little villages there can be a problem, that they don’t have a ATM. So, always be prepared to have enough money with you when you going to a little village. I was two times without money in the middle of nowhere and had luck that I could borrow some money from a fellow backpacker. (Thanks Jack, thanks Francois!) Credit cards are also common in Bulgaria. (especially Visa and master card). If you use traveller checks, I heard that not all exchange offices and banks will change them. So, I think the best thing is to change them in the bigger towns, where they have larger banks such as...

Eating&Drinking in Bulgaria

by ger4444

About eating and drinking. First, you should know that when you get your menu, that you note that everything that you get e.g. beef, chicken, pork, or whatso ever is all you get. Its not with potatoes/ French fries or salads etc. These things have to be ordered separately. (and will cost extra) Salads is a good thing to start then. You will receive them before the main mael but you can of course – them being cold and fresh as they are – save to come togheter with the main dish. Bread is almost never for free, so if you don’t want it; say so! The waiter will put all the bills on your table (he puts them under the ash-tray or under your glass) and you will have to pay at the end of your meal. But be aware: you can do a lot of money saving (but this is also a bit akward to state since Bulgaria is so cheap!) if you are able to read a menu in Bulgarian. Ask for the Bulgarian menu then; and...

National Revival Architecture

by ger4444

In Bulgaria you can find some architecture, that is nowhere to be found in the rest of Europe: it’s the: National Revival architecture. (19 th century) These peaces of architecture can be found in koprivshtitsa, Melnik and Plovdiv and, if you look good, also in other places. What is this style exactly? The style can be seen as a maniesto of restance against the Ottoman ruler. By visually creating a typical national style of architecture one could set a direct confrontation the foreign rulers. To make the picture complete: a lot of nationalist rebel leaders (intellectuals, artists) used to live in these houses; f.e. in Koprivstitsa, you can find the houses of people who played a crucial role in the struggle for independence: such as Kableshkov, Oslekov and others. What was so unique on these buildings? The homes were made of stone, wood and limestone. Groundfloors were made of bare stoon...
