    Veliko Turnovo Favorites

In the middle of the city centre you'll find the little Tourist Info Centre. I personally didn't have to cause to use it this time round but it looks as if it would be useful. Here you can get a free photocopied city map, accommodation help, general advice on things to do, public transport info and it also acts as booking agents for major local...

    Veliko Turnovo Things to Do

UPDATE - This was my original write-up from my first, very short, visit. I'll leave it here, relegated to the bottom of my list, for my own reference. For the two centuries of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185 to 1396) Veliko Turnovo was Bulgaria's capital city. During this period the fortress of Tsarevets was constructed on its eponymous hill as...

    Pleven Restaurants

This not centrally located restaurant went through many transformations (it was also Italian in the past) but I do believe that its owners finally found the right cuisine for their venue and now it serves different dishes from the Balkan peninsular with a focus on the Bulgarian and especially the Serbian barbecue (done on real wooden coal it is...

  • Michael & Gabriel Church

    Arbanasi Things to Do

The Michael & Gabriel Church (300 years old, and now a museum) has a plain exterior with a flat roof, but seems to be a different building from inside. Under Turkish rule, churches couldn’t be taller or more beautiful than a mosque, and they couldn’t have domes. The architect created a dome (important to Orthodox Christians) on the inside by...

    Apriltsi Tourist Traps

The disco clubs in Apriltsi have little disco music. There almost all the time goes that serbo-gypsy type of music called "chalga". You can just choose one and try the Bulgarian kitchen. There are big boards outside the restaurants saying what their unique dishes are. Most of them are in Bulgarian language, but don't pay attention-just eat! :))) Some Bulgarian dishes I like are "tarator" and "shopska" salad. I'm sure they are in each menu :)
