There are two big folklore fetivals in town. From the end of June till the middlle of July it is the International Folklore Festival .Thsi festival has more than 300 acts from all over the Balkans. In may -- firts half -- there is a ten day festival, the Balkan Folk Festival. Info at TIC

The local "Roma" have a rich cultural "tradition" of harrassing any & all passerbys for:
MONEY
LEVA
EURO
DOLLAR
TSIGARI (cigarettes)
Don't ask, don't give...and most of all, don't believe ANY of their stories (ie: "father dead", "mother in hospital", "children sick/dying", or "hungry"). Most are better-off than the average Bulgarian. Notice their gold-chains, designer clothing, satellite dish, and pot-bellies. The Roma have been unwelcome houseguests in BG for 1000+ years, and visitors to BG cannot presume to rebuke Bulgarians for their ingrained "racism".
