Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: as the old town is cobble stone and the fortress is muddy and has brick trail, wear hiking boots or at least strong shoes. Also for the surrounded area such as the Trapezitsa and Arbanasi it is recommendable

Luggage and bags: Packing lite or bring your items in a small bag, with wheels would be good but also that you can carry with you by hand since their are many dirt roads in the mountain areas

Photo Equipment: Digital Camera a must
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Water is a must, you can by water in Bulgaria very cheap and good quality
Miscellaneous: A good hat for the sun.
