One of things that I find difficult to find in Bulgaria is handrolling tobacco and papers. I suppose because ready-made cigarettes are so cheap there's not really much call for it.
However here in Veliko Turnovo I found not one but two shops on the main street which stock the makings. As a bonus the No1 Non-Stop also sells cheap beer and so I bacame a short-term regular.
Service was always friendly and the staff all spoke a little English.
What to buy: Red Bull tobacco (at 7 leva for 40 grams), OCR cigarette papers (at 50 stotinki) and Zagorka (at 2.50 leva for 1.5 litres).

There are a lot of small shops in the old part of Veliko Turnovo. There are even a few designer shops there. The prices are correct probably a bit cheaper but not very much than in other countries in the designer shops.
There is also a small mall built within an old department store, just close to Trapezitsa restaurant.

The Samovodska Charshiya Complex is a centered around a square and artisans practise their trade here. You find bookstores, boutiques, art. The shops have been renovated in the national revival style.
What to buy: crafts and local art

apart from the mostly petty souvenirs, there's not much to do on the main shopping street in Veliko Tarnovo. Some clothing items and shoes may seem a bargain, but quality is poor. Besides, most "boutiques" sell the same items and at similar prices.
We looked for typical bulgarian parfumes, cakes and sweets, but all i managed to buy was some sweet red wine, excellent though.

Veliko Turnovo is an ideal spot to explore central Bulgaria. There is much to see in this old capital city, and there are many interesting villages and monasteries within easy driving distance.
