Happy Bar and Grill: Good Old Happy

by johngayton Updated Nov 24, 2013
    St Nedelya Happy

I have a love/hate relationship with the Bulgarian (established Varna 1994) restaurant chain Happy. I love the food, I love the ambience and I love the prices but I hate how easy it is to eat at nowhere else in Bulgaria but Happy - Happy is just too accessible!

Here in Sofia there are several outlets with the main one being on the corner of St Nedelya Square just up from the Serdika Metro station.

The menu is the same in all the Happy restaurants, a sort of fast food take on Bulgarian cuisine with a few Oriental and American dishes thrown in curveball-style. Service is always friendly and professional and the micro-skirted, multi-lingual, waitresses a delight.

The St Nedelya outlet is a 24/7 one which makes it doubly useful if arriving in the city late or looking for a bite to eat after a night out.

Favorite Dish: On this visit I had arrived back into the city quite late and with my hotel being just off the Serdika Metro Happy's attractions were too difficult to refuse. The waitresses were as gorgeous as ever and for food I opted for a sort of "sausage mixed grill" which was fairly new to the menu. This did the requisite job of providing tasty sustenance and washed down with a couple of beers left enough change from the 20 leva note I proffered to make for a smilingly-received tip.

    I HATE Happy!

Not a fancy place but more like the place to go if you want to have a quick but decent meal during lunch breaks.

The waitresses are very kind and always wear short skirts :))) The food is good.

Happy Bar & Grill (chain): A good safe bet

This is a local chain that I ate in once in Sofia and once in Plovdiv.
    Indoor and outdoor seating.

They advertise Italian, but I enjoyed their salads very much. They also serve full meals with meat as ordered.
Had a Shopska salad in Sofia that I couldn't finish together with a spinach pie. Very tasty.

The coffee, like almost everywhere in Bulgaria, is perfect!

Can fill up at lunch time and then customers are expected to share tables.

Lots of tourists, but also plenty of locals. Good food at reasonable prices.

Favorite Dish: Fresh salads and vegetable pies.
    COFFEE !!

One of a chain now spreading across Europe, visited one several years ago on the coast so thought we would try this one.
Large menu to choose from and plenty of variety with enough vegetarian choices for Mrs B.
Enjoyed our meal and a couple of beers in an outside terrace - very good.
    Website in Bulgarian only.

  • HAPPY BAR & GRILL: The best in Sofia

    by lucio58h Written May 10, 2009

I love HAPPY BAR & GRILL RESTAURANT for the big variety of dishes and the nice athmosfere. In particular I love the one in the city Center (near Vithosha), and the one in Staboliska (inside the MALL OF SOFIA - here you can have a "look" at the way the cook!!!)
In particular, in the Happy Bar & Grill near Vithosha a good friend of mine works, her name is Hrisi, a beautiful and really kind girl. All the waiters are nice and good looking, but Hrisi is special!!!

Favorite Dish: I adore Happy Bar & GRILL chain restaurants in Sofia. I always eat there. In particular i like chicken dishes. There is one that I love (chicken spitful rolled with bacon)

Can anyone help me for this recipe?

I would like to know how do they prepare chicken with bacon in Happy...
    1) Do they prepare in the restaurant or it arrives already prepared?
    2) Which part of chicken is used (breast or other?).
    3) Any pre-treatment of the meat in order to make it soft (do they leave it for some time in any souce or something like this)?
    3) Is this sequence correct? you cut the escalope in shorter (rectangular) parts; you roll the bacon around the escalope, then you you cut it in pieces, and after you put inside the spitful, and finallly you crush it so that it is thiner?
    4) Is the grill on fire or coal or electric or in the oven?
    5) Any photo about the way of cooking?
    6) Any photo of the dish?

    Thank you very much!!!

Now in november of this year we were in sofia, and the first night we were losed looking for a place for eat,and we find Happy in ravkosky.
Great find!it´s a special place,a lovely place,a frindly place...We eat there every night,it´s very cheap, very good...There are many dishes for eat,and they have a menu in english!!Important in sofia becouse it isn´t in every where.
The waiters are very very nice girls, and very friendly with us....

A mixture of local cuisine ,international meals ,grill and fresh salads makes "Happy"

Opposite the St Nedelya church you'll find this well known bar & grill restaurant, where the food is bulgarian in a western surrounding.
TVs all around show you football games from all over the world, which is definitely a big plus for this place

Favorite Dish: Look at this large brochette , with plates all around it .. need I say more?
