    Vasil Levski National Stadium

by johngayton Written May 29, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of Bulgaria's main sporting venues is the Vasil Levski National Stadium, located in Sofia's Borisova Gardens.

This is the country's second largest stadium (Plovdiv's having a greater capacity) and is named after the National Revolutionary Hero Vasil Levski who was a major figure during the late 19th century struggle against Ottoman rule.

The stadium is home to the National Football team and is also used for most major national and international sporting events as well as as a concert venue.

Tickets for events can be bought at the box offices in front of the stadium or from the main tourist office in the underpass of the nearby St Kliment Ohridski Metro station.

Vitosha - the mountain next to Sofia. Maybe a bit crowded, but it's right outdoors from Sofia. It provides places for hiking, walking, cycling, mountain climbing (alpinism), skiing in the winter. There are many hotels and chalets with different accomodation and prices.

Equipment: Regular mountain equipment; warm clothes even in summer

    Ice Skating

by ChristinaNest Written Jan 21, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This winter, for the first time, Sofia has open-air ice-skating rinks. One is right in front of the National Theatre, one is behind NDK, and one at Orlov Most (Eagle's Bridge).
They will operate till March, and are open 11-22 hrs. They have set sessions of 1.5 hrs, entrance is 3 lv (1.5 euro) and rental skates are 3 lv.
Photos are of the rink in front of the Theatre, where I skated for the first time in my life, on the last day of 2006!

    National sport

    Football, the national sport
Living in Antwerp with french roots, I had different feelings about Bulgaria eliminating France from the World Cup in 1993 and Antwerp coming back from 1-3 down to win the game 4-3 in the extra time for the UEFA Cup.
Yet after watching as much football games and/or stadiums as possible in different countries (Belgium, France, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Spain) I had to watch a game in Sofia.

Sofia houses 4 first league teams
As CSKA and Levski played away, we chose to watch a game of Slavia instead of Lokomotiv
The stadium is very basic though it can allegedly accept 32000 visitors
3 leva a ticket makes this my cheapest ticket of all time.
During the game all supporters are eating frilled sunflower beans. After they throw the remains on the floor the seats look like a giant bird cage
End result Slavia Sofia - Litex Lovech 0 - 0

stadium entrance slavia - litex lovech 0-0 birdcage ?

Located across the building of the National Radio , on Dragan tzankov street , this newly built horseriding base "Egida" opens from 8:30 in the morning
Prices are 15 lv for 20 min with instructor ,
20 lv ( 10 euro ) for half an hour with instructor,
If you are already skilled , it will cost you probably less as you won't need guidance.

CSKA the home of football in Bulgaria

    by Martin_H Written Jun 2, 2005

CSKA are probably the most well known and successful team in Bulgaria. Their history dates back to 1948 and in common with former USSR states CSKA denotes the army club.
This was a Bulgarian 'A' league match against Vidima-Rakovski which CSKA went on to win by a convincing 3-0.
The ground itself is a typical small European stadium with running track and a largely useless roof over the centre part of the main stand. Ticket prices are from 1 to 4 leva (0.3 - 1.3 GBP).
A word of warning, all the seats appear to be covered with a layer of cement dust so do what the locals do and bring a newspaper to put on the seat!

There are chess tables in the small park in front of the National Theatre. You can watch or play with the professionals. Until last year, both women's and men's chess world champions were Bulgarian.
