One of the city's most imposing buildings is “St. Kliment Ohridski” university, which translates into St. Clement of Ohrid University - though it is better known - simply - as Sofia University. Founded in 1888, as an institution, it's the country's oldest university. The building where it is located, however, was built between 1924 and 1934.

The University hosts 16 faculties, 3 departments and 14,000 students and can be visited daily from 07:30 tp 20:00.

University of Sofia Kliment Ohridski is in the most beautiful art of the city - very near the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral - and definitely helps to keep up the impression of artistic grandeur. The façade of the building is a far cry from the grey and stern government buildings of Ploshtad Nezavisimost and gives the impression of the Classical greatness of Sofia's institutions of higher learning. I didn't enter the University, but it is still quite famous for producing many students who go on to student at the top institutions in Western Europe and North America.

    Botanical Gardens

The University of Sofia Kliment Ohridski maintains its own botanical gardens near the School of Architecture that are quite pretty and that have a beautiful collection of rose bushes. Entrance to the gardens is 2 leva (which you have to pay to the woman at the gate, although sometimes she's in the tent). You're free to wander the grounds and take pictures, which is especially nice in summer when the varies species of roses are in bloom. There is also a green house with some tropical plants and a back part to the garden (behind the green house) with an arbour and sculpted rose bushes. Its a nice way to take a break from admiring icons and churches, which you will undoubtedly have done a lot of if you've just come from the Al. Nevsky Cathedral and the Crypt.

Sofia University 'Sveti Kliment Ohridski' (Saint Clement of Ohrid) is Bulgaria's oldest university. It was my alma mater for more than 10 years and a workplace for a short period. This is the main building housing the administration, faculties of Philosophy, History, Geography and of some Western, Slavic and Classical languages. I was lucky to have most of my classes there.

    The University

This is the country's most prestigious university.

The imposing building was built in 1906, several years after Sofia became Bulgaria's capital. The French architect Breanson designed it.

On both sides of the main entrance are the statues of the 2 brothers, Evlogi and Hristo Georgiev, who donated the land and money for the founding of the university.

In the nearby park, on the way to the cathedral, you can find the monument to St Kliment Ohridski.

    "Kliment Ohridski' University of Sofia
If you want to see where the 'young blood' of the capital is, this is exactly the place to see more young people in Sofia than anywhere else - 'St.Kliment Ohridski' University of Sofia. There are always youths around going to their classes during the day or hanging for one of the numerous clubs with live music or bars in the area during the evening. This is not the University I am studying but it is one of the most prestigious and provides lots of really good specialists in different aspects of science - historians, geographers, lowers, language specialist and many more.
Did you know that?Actually the University was built thanks to two brothers - Evlogi and Christo Georgievi, who donated the land and the money for the funding of the university. That is why you can see their statues standing on the both sides of the main entrance of the University.
