Coburg Palace

The old royal palace of the Coburg tsars of Bulgaria is located just north of the city park in centrral Sofia. The palace has just received a new coat of yellow paint, and is really quite beautiful from the outside. I suppose it would be considered French neo-classical in architecture, or something like that. The building houses the Ethnographic Museum on the east end and the National Art Museum on the west end. Frankly, both museums are a little disappointing (particularly the art museum), with much of the palace appearing empty. The Ethnographic Museum does have a good souvenier shop, and the Art Museum sells excellent, inexpensive prints. Both museums could be housed somewhere else--in smaller quarters. I think the Bulgarian government is missing a bet with this palace. Many tourists--especially including American tourists like myself--will trek all over Europe to gawk at the trappings of royalty. Pull together some of the old palace furnishings (if possible), hang a few portraits of Tsar Ferdinand and "Good King Boris," do a little marketing, and "voila!" instant tourist destination.

The National Art Gallery

This building currently hosts the National Art Gallery, formerly being built to house the Bulgarian kings after the liberation from Turkish occupation in 1878.

The recently renovated national art exposition hall. It used to be the Bulgarian king's palace some 60 years ago.
