    Merova Poljana

by Childish Written Jul 27, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Next to the village of Zheljava on the way to the peak and hut Murgash. There is a monument of Angel Todorov - one of the group of revolutioneries lead by Hristo Botev (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hristo_Botev ). On this place he was captured by Ottomans and killed.

It is possible to get to Merova poljana by car from village of Zheljava - the distance is about 6km. From there on you can start climbing of the peak Murgash - you will need about 4 hours. But the way to Mugrash is no longer maintained by Bulgarian Toursist Union.

The village of Zheljava itself is located 2km away from village of Jana. See my Buhovo monastery tip for more info.

The people of Zheljava are incredibly helpful. They are ready to spend a half an hour to give you directions.

    Monastery near Buhovo

by Childish Written Jul 27, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Buhovo belongs to the industrial part of Sofia. But near this small town there is a monastery Maria Magdalena. We went their on 22th of July and it was a coincidence that the monastery has a holiday then. So it was full of pilgrims. The church is very small and odd. As you can see on the picture the nowadays church was built in 1881. It is rather strange that it is on the list of the monuments of culture in Bulgaria.

To reach Buchovo from Sofia take A-2 hightway in direction to Varna. Just after you leave the village of Dolni Bogrov turn to Jana, then follow the signs to Buchovo. When you reach the gas station follow north (to the left) but better ask for directions on the gas station.

    Lozen Monastery St. Spass

by Childish Updated Jun 27, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The monastery was originally built according to different sources in 11-12th or in 13th century and then destroyed when Bulgaria fell under the rule of Ottoman turks.
Then in was rebuilt in 17th century by a Greek monk.
The church is impressive both with its architecture with 3 naves and its frescoes which were recently renovated.
The monastery still does not offer food and accommodation but the constuction works still take place there so this will change soon.

To reach the monastery first go to the village of Lozen and better ask the local people how to get there. To reach the monastery by car you need a jeep or something like this. Better leave the car at the end of the way and go on by foot. You will enjoy a half-hour walk through the mountain Lozen. When we went there there was a lot of strawberries.
See my travelogue for more pictures.

Frescoes of Church St. Spass in Lozen Monastery

by Childish Written Jun 27, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Beside the architecture which I find very impressive the frescoes inside the church attract your attention immedially after you enter the church. The wall paintings and the architecture are the complement of one another.
The frescoes were done Nikola Obrazopisov, Hristaki Zahgariev and Dimitar Dupnichanin. They were recently renovated (partially).

    Kremikovtsi Monastery

by Childish Updated Apr 11, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It was build at the time of Ivan Alexander during the Second Bulgarian State. Then it was completely ruined by the Otoman troops and then in 1493 it was reconstructured.
Currently the monastery is maintained just by one nun. It has been renovated since 1990.
There are two churches there. There are amazing wall paintings inside the older one. The new church was built in the beginning of the 20th century.

a view from outside the new church the fresco on the old church the old church outside seen from the road

Katinski Piramidi are an interesting rock formation. Unfortunately it seems to me that they will disappear soon.
