by bijo69 The beautiful village of Melnik is situated in the Southwestern part of Bulgaria, close to the Greek border. It is know for its delicious red wine and the well preserved Revival period houses. You find the biggest of its kind here, Kordupulova Kushta built 1754. You can hike from Melnik to the Rozhen Monastery, 7km away. It was built in the 13th century and has beautiful murals from the 16th century and a collection of icons. Leave a Comment

the summer palace by bijo69 Balchik is a lovely little town at the Black Sea Coast, about 50km North of Varna. The main sight of Balchik is the summer residence of the former Romanian Queen Mary (Balchik belonged to Romania from 1913-1940). The little castle was built between 1924-31 and is a mixture of different architectural styles. The park surrounding the castle is now the Botanical Garden showing the largest cactus collection of the Balkans. The public beach here is rather small compared to those of the big resorts further South. Leave a Comment

Smolyan is the biggest town in the Rhodopi mountains. The development of Smolyan was pushed by the communists leaders starting back in the 1960ties and the city centre is immense for a town of just 35.000 inhabitants. The Historicam Museums, the Art Gallery and the Planetarium are well worth visiting. Smolyan is good starting point for hikes in the Rhodopi mountains. Leave a Comment

Dramatic seas by ettenaj Take yourselves away from the resorts to really find what Bulgaria is really like. We found many nice beaches far away from the tourists, and also found out the true costs of things in the local shops and restuarants. If you think the resorts are cheap, go inland a little, you wont believe the difference in prices. We purchased 1 bottle of gin, 2 bottles of tonic water, 1 box of chocs, 2 packets of crisps,1 packet of biscuits and 1 bottle of bleach and the bill came to under Ģ3.00 I rest my case................. The little village of Madara is know for it's famous rock carving of a horseman (Madarski Konnik). The bas-relief is 23m above the ground and was created in the early 8th century and it is believed that the horseman is Khan Tervel, one of the emperors of the 1st Bulgarian Empire. It's a Unesco Heritage site. Not far from the horseman are the ruins of the Madara fortress which was built during the 2nd Bulgarian Empire. You've got splendid views from here. You can also visit the nearby caves, which were already inhabited by the Thracians in the 4th century AD. There's also a small museum with exhibits from different time periods. Admission to the complex is 2 BGN. Leave a Comment

by bijo69 Sliven is a midsize town between Plovdiv and Burgas. It has not much to offer itself, but the nearby Notional Park "Sinite Kameni" is worth a visit if you like hiking. You can go to the Karandila area, where you find a hotel and restaurants, by cablecar. Lots of paths lead from here into the mountains. Leave a Comment

by bijo69 Bachkovo Monastery, situated 28km South of Plovdiv, is the second largest in Bulgaria. It was built in the 11th century by two Georgian brothers. It was mostly destroyed by the Turks in the 14th century and rebuilt a century later. The main treasure of the monastery is a miracle working icon (Sveta Bogorodica) which is said to heal the sick. by bijo69 Shumen is a pleasant mid-size town between Varna and V. Turnovo. It is overlooked by an old fortress which dates back to the Thracians and the gigantic "Creators of the Bulgarian State" momunent from 1981. Another main site is the beautifully decorated Tombul Mosque, the largest working mosque in Bulgaria. Shumen is also a good base to visit the famous rock carving at Madara and the ruins of the 2nd Bulgarian capital of Veliki Preslav. Leave a Comment

clocktower by bijo69 Tryavna is a charming little town about 40 km to the South from Veliko Turnovo. Lots of the old houses and churches here have been restored recently. As the the town is well known for its woodcarving school and iconography, there are a few small museums related to these arts which are worth a visit. Leave a Comment

Rhodopes by elgin99 This mountains are really worth to see it. 500 kilometers far from our accomodation, belong the coastline (Black Sea) to the south part of Bulgaria, nearby Turkey border. Our goal was Ropotamo. Great areas with very big trees. Itīs a region with tradition of forestry and hunting. It was a nice route, through some old towns and with fantastic nature. Sorry, a very bad picture, bot I have no more other one. Leave a Comment
