Zheravna is a village some 40 km north of Sliven. It's an architectural ethnographical open-air museum with many Bulgarian Revival buildings. There are houses from 17 and 18 centuries, a school from 1867, a cultural club from 1870, a church and drinking fountains. Most of the houses are wooden and very beautiful. Some of them, where prominent Bulgarians lived, were turned into museums: Yordan Yovkov's ( a great Bulgarian writer), Filaretov's, Ikonomov's, Kehaya's houses and others.
It makes a nice day-trip. Could be also combined with another old town, Kotel.
In some of the sea resorts there are organized trips. While working at Elenite Holiday Village I once guided a tour to Sliven ( a visit to a crystal factory, and then chair-lift to Karandila in Stara Planina) and then a visit to Zheravna and lunch at an old tavern.

2 km off the main road from Varna to Bourgas is a little village named Yunetz, this is where we have purchased our apartment. It is set amongst the forests and has fantastic views as you can see from the roof terrace. It is extremely quiet apart from the odd chicken or donkey that roam around quite freely!!! Our idea of heaven, with the beach only 7 km away.......... perfection!!!

The Rila and Pirin Mountains are higher and probably better known, but the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) are also worth a visit.

If you're based in Sofia it's easy to visit the Iskar Valley as a daytrip by train. Not all trains stop at the smaller stations so check timetables.

This picture was taken just after getting off the train at Gara Lakatnik. Just across the bridge is a cafe which marks the start of a trail that goes up the side of the cliff. It looks intimidating but it doesn't actually take long to get to the top. The views along the way make the effort worthwhile.

The town of Asenovgrad is well worth visiting if you are staying in Plovidv. There are a variety of trails along the sides of the valley to the south of the town. You can walk to a number of small religious buildings as well as the larger Church of Sveta Bogoroditsa (visible in the distance in the photo). Near the church is a ruined fortress with wonderful views.

It's an easy excursion from Plovdiv as there are regular trains to Asenovgrad. You could also stop off on the way to or from Bachkovo Monastery,

This monastery is tucked away in a narrow valley a short distance to the north of Veliko Tarnavo. The painted exterior walls of the church are particularly appealing. You can read more about the monastery at the link below.

A nice way to get there is to hike over the hills from Veliko Tarnovo. Go to the highest part of the old Varosha quarter and look for the signposted 'eco trail' to the monastery.

Veliki Preslav was the second capital of the 1st Bulgarian Empire. It was founded in the early 9th century by the Bulgar king Khan Omurtag and became the inofficial capital in 921 after the old one, Pliska was destroyed by the Byzantines in 911. In 893 Preslav was also officallly declared capital by Tsar Boris. But the glory of Preslav didn't last long, the town was sacked by Byzantines aswell in 972.
But during its short period of existence, Preslav must have been a splendid town. The outer city was spread over 5sq km and protected by a high stonewall and contained churches, monasteries and residences, the inner city was encircled with another wall and housed the royal palace.
Unfortunately you only see ruins of these nowadays, but the Archeological Museum has models of how the most important buildings once looked like.
The ruins of Veliki Preslav are 3 km from the "new" Preslav, which is located about 18km from Shumen.

Tryavna is a small town on the Northern slopes of central Stara Planina (the Balkan Mountain) about 20 km east of Gabrovo. It was founded in the 12 century and during the 18 and 19 cc was an important artisan centre (wool-carving, icon painting, weaving, etc.). There are a lot of old, Bulgarian Revival, houses and buildings, that’s why the central part is a protected area. There is an Icon and Woodcarving Museum, a clock tower from 1814, and old churches, schools and other buildings.
It’s a nice and quiet place to visit.

Red., white, dry, sweet whatever your tipple you can sample it here. In a lovely courtyard , at the back of the building, you can sample these local wines. After sampling you can of course buy the ones you like, they are a little dearer than in the shops, but at least you can try before you buy!! The winery is on the main road from Varna to Bourgas just before you reach Balya, on the left hand side, grape sellers are usually on the corner just before you reach it.

Sliven was an iportant trade and industrial centre during the Bulgarian Revival. It was where the country's first textile factory was founded, in 1836 by Dobri Zhelyazkov.
There's a Historical Museum, an art gallery, ethnographcal museum, , and other buildings from the Bulgarian Revival. There are th museum-houses of Hadji Dimiter, Dobri Chintulov and Panayot Hitov.
The hills of the Balkan mountain (Stara Planina) tower above Sliven. That area is called Sinite Kamuny ( The Blue Rocks) and was turned into a national park. There are many huts, hotels and villas there. There's a chair lift to Karandila.
The pictures were all taken from the chair-lift.

Chudnite mostove (The Fascinating Bridges' is a natural phenomenon at the Tsenovo Reservoir (formerly called yazovir Guergui Traikov) half-way between Karnobat and Varna. A small road goes under those natural stone bridges, it's very picturesque.
