Devin

by bijo69

Devin is a small town in the Rhodopi Mountains. It's well known for its mineral water and many of the hotels there offers all kinds of spa treatments. The minreal water is bottled aswell and is sold under the name of "Devin".Other than that there's not a lot to do and see in town. But should you have you own kind of transport, the surrounding area is beautiful!

Our seaside on Albena sea resort and Kaliakra cape

by bgjulieta

Albena is a famous sea resort here with many nice hotels. near Varna.Kaliakra is related with our history, when we were under Ottoman rule. There is a legend that three girls didn't want to convert to muslim religion and that's why they have jumped out of this cape in the sea. This cape is located near Balchik, on our northern seaside. You can go rthere by car or taxi but warn the driver to wait you or ask him to guide you. There is also a small beach where you can escape from the crowd and enjoy seeing dolphins in wild. :-)On the fourth pic you will see the 'door' through which they have jumped.

Sobering statues of Varna

by NickCh

A weird detour we made in Varna was to a hilltop monument we spotted whilst driving along the coast . . . it turned out to be quite a relic from the Communist era, and a deterrent to any would-be invader out there in the Black Sea . . . oh, and absolutely colossal !!

Veliki Preslav

by bijo69

Veliki Preslav was the second capital of the 1st Bulgarian Empire. It was founded in the early 9th century by the Bulgar king Khan Omurtag and became the inofficial capital in 921 after the old one, Pliska was destroyed by the Byzantines in 911. In 893 Preslav was also officallly declared capital by Tsar Boris. But the glory of Preslav didn't last long, the town was sacked by Byzantines aswell in 972.But during its short period of existence, Preslav must have been a splendid town. The outer city was spread over 5sq km and protected by a high stonewall and contained churches, monasteries and residences, the inner city was encircled with another wall and housed the royal palace.Unfortunately you only see ruins of these nowadays, but the Archeological Museum has models of how the most important buildings once looked like. The ruins of Veliki Preslav are 3 km from the "new" Preslav, which is...

Madara

by bijo69

The little village of Madara is know for it's famous rock carving of a horseman (Madarski Konnik). The bas-relief is 23m above the ground and was created in the early 8th century and it is believed that the horseman is Khan Tervel, one of the emperors of the 1st Bulgarian Empire. It's a Unesco Heritage site. Not far from the horseman are the ruins of the Madara fortress which was built during the 2nd Bulgarian Empire. You've got splendid views from here. You can also visit the nearby caves, which were already inhabited by the Thracians in the 4th century AD. There's also a small museum with exhibits from different time periods.Admission to the complex is 2 BGN.

Shumen

by bijo69

Shumen is a pleasant mid-size town between Varna and V. Turnovo. It is overlooked by an old fortress which dates back to the Thracians and the gigantic "Creators of the Bulgarian State" momunent from 1981. Another main site is the beautifully decorated Tombul Mosque, the largest working mosque in Bulgaria.Shumen is also a good base to visit the famous rock carving at Madara and the ruins of the 2nd Bulgarian capital of Veliki Preslav.

Pigs

by ettenaj

Dont be alarmed if you are in the villages and come across a herd of pigs or goats, chickens roam freely and there is always the donkey!! There are also a lot of dogs that can be a bit of a pain at night if you are a light sleeper, as they tend to bark for no apparent reason.

Zheravna

by ChristinaNest

Zheravna is a village some 40 km north of Sliven. It's an architectural ethnographical open-air museum with many Bulgarian Revival buildings. There are houses from 17 and 18 centuries, a school from 1867, a cultural club from 1870, a church and drinking fountains. Most of the houses are wooden and very beautiful. Some of them, where prominent Bulgarians lived, were turned into museums: Yordan Yovkov's ( a great Bulgarian writer), Filaretov's, Ikonomov's, Kehaya's houses and others. It makes a nice day-trip. Could be also combined with another old town, Kotel. In some of the sea resorts there are organized trips. While working at Elenite Holiday Village I once guided a tour to Sliven ( a visit to a crystal factory, and then chair-lift to Karandila in Stara Planina) and then a visit to Zheravna and lunch at an old tavern.

Sliven & Karandila

by ChristinaNest

Sliven was an iportant trade and industrial centre during the Bulgarian Revival. It was where the country's first textile factory was founded, in 1836 by Dobri Zhelyazkov. There's a Historical Museum, an art gallery, ethnographcal museum, , and other buildings from the Bulgarian Revival. There are th museum-houses of Hadji Dimiter, Dobri Chintulov and Panayot Hitov. The hills of the Balkan mountain (Stara Planina) tower above Sliven. That area is called Sinite Kamuny ( The Blue Rocks) and was turned into a national park. There are many huts, hotels and villas there. There's a chair lift to Karandila. The pictures were all taken from the chair-lift.
