Tryavna

by ChristinaNest

Tryavna is a small town on the Northern slopes of central Stara Planina (the Balkan Mountain) about 20 km east of Gabrovo. It was founded in the 12 century and during the 18 and 19 cc was an important artisan centre (wool-carving, icon painting, weaving, etc.). There are a lot of old, Bulgarian Revival, houses and buildings, that’s why the central part is a protected area. There is an Icon and Woodcarving Museum, a clock tower from 1814, and old churches, schools and other buildings. It’s a nice and quiet place to visit.

"Chudnite mostove"

by ChristinaNest

Chudnite mostove (The Fascinating Bridges' is a natural phenomenon at the Tsenovo Reservoir (formerly called yazovir Guergui Traikov) half-way between Karnobat and Varna. A small road goes under those natural stone bridges, it's very picturesque.

Try Bulgarian fruits and vegetables

by ChristinaNest

Tired of that plastic taste supermarket veggies have in Western Europe or the USA? Discover the real taste of tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Buy them at some small local market or from some granny selling her own produce in the street! Hurry up before Bulgaria joins the European Union, then we'll be eating plastic too :(Also, when passing through a village, you might stop and ask to buy some home-made cheese, yoghurt, try veggies fresh from the garden and goat's/sheep's/cow's milk...home-made wine and rakiya...... home-made preserves, lyutenitza and pickles...

Ivan Rilski's cave

by Tom_In_Madison

If staying at Rila Monastery, there's an unofficial trail from there to where Ivan Rilski lived. He lived in a cave around the year 900. It's a fun, not difficult hike. You're up in the mountains so it's real beautiful. When you get to where the caves are, you can crawl in and out the top like a chimney and around there. Hard to believe he lived here, alone mostly. Walk away from the Monastery, toward the city and past, then it sort of appears on the left side of the road. If any of this in incorrect, I apoligize, I'm no expert on BG history, but I try.

Bachkovo Monastery, situated 28km South of Plovdiv, is the second largest in Bulgaria. It was built in the 11th century by two Georgian brothers. It was mostly destroyed by the Turks in the 14th century and rebuilt a century later. The main treasure of the monastery is a miracle working icon (Sveta Bogorodica) which is said to heal the sick.

Balchik

by bijo69

Balchik is a lovely little town at the Black Sea Coast, about 50km North of Varna. The main sight of Balchik is the summer residence of the former Romanian Queen Mary (Balchik belonged to Romania from 1913-1940). The little castle was built between 1924-31 and is a mixture of different architectural styles. The park surrounding the castle is now the Botanical Garden showing the largest cactus collection of the Balkans. The public beach here is rather small compared to those of the big resorts further South.

It was built in the 13th century and has beautiful murals from the 16th century and a collection of icons.

Tryavna is a charming little town about 40 km to the South from Veliko Turnovo. Lots of the old houses and churches here have been restored recently. As the the town is well known for its woodcarving school and iconography, there are a few small museums related to these arts which are worth a visit.
