4 x 4 off road adventure

by simonbuckle3

I took a tour up into the Balkans in a landrover, After a 4 km ride through mountain tracks which is an experience in itself, We arrived at the village of Emona up in the mountains, just outside of the village is an open area where you can go horse riding or quad biking and shooting with bows and arrows or rifles. After doing the activities you go on a cultural drive to a small church where the host gives a condensed talk on the religion and history of the area.Once you have been educated the party then goes to a wonderful restaurant and has a superb home cooked meal and drinks, Then it is a drive back to the hotel visiting a secluded beach en route.A fantastic day

Rhodopes - mountains, Ropotamo

by elgin99

This mountains are really worth to see it. 500 kilometers far from our accomodation, belong the coastline (Black Sea) to the south part of Bulgaria, nearby Turkey border. Our goal was Ropotamo. Great areas with very big trees. It´s a region with tradition of forestry and hunting. It was a nice route, through some old towns and with fantastic nature.Sorry, a very bad picture, bot I have no more other one.

Go local

by Linse

Taxidrivers have special excursions they can take u on. Find a taxidriver who can talk with u in other languages than bulgarian and then ask him where he could recommend u to go if u dont have and exact place u want to see. Then its certain that he will do a lot of effort for u to have a great time and he knows all the good places there is to see. Maybe he even knows some places where most tourists dont come. Thats a much better way to see Bulgaria compared to what the travelagencys can offer u.

Sample the local wine

by ettenaj

Red., white, dry, sweet whatever your tipple you can sample it here. In a lovely courtyard , at the back of the building, you can sample these local wines. After sampling you can of course buy the ones you like, they are a little dearer than in the shops, but at least you can try before you buy!! The winery is on the main road from Varna to Bourgas just before you reach Balya, on the left hand side, grape sellers are usually on the corner just before you reach it.

Secluded coast

by ettenaj

Take yourselves away from the resorts to really find what Bulgaria is really like. We found many nice beaches far away from the tourists, and also found out the true costs of things in the local shops and restuarants. If you think the resorts are cheap, go inland a little, you wont believe the difference in prices. We purchased 1 bottle of gin, 2 bottles of tonic water, 1 box of chocs, 2 packets of crisps,1 packet of biscuits and 1 bottle of bleach and the bill came to under £3.00 I rest my case.................

" Our " village

by ettenaj

2 km off the main road from Varna to Bourgas is a little village named Yunetz, this is where we have purchased our apartment. It is set amongst the forests and has fantastic views as you can see from the roof terrace. It is extremely quiet apart from the odd chicken or donkey that roam around quite freely!!! Our idea of heaven, with the beach only 7 km away.......... perfection!!!

Boars by the Beach- Sinemorets Sand Bar

by pon

With a car, if you head down the main road off the Black Sea south towards Turkey, cross the bridge after Ahtopol and you'll come to the small Bulgarian village of Sinemorets. The beach is before you enter the town.Right after the bridge, look to the left for a small road leading down the hill through a forest clearing. You might need an off-roading vehicle or just need to drive really carefully; our little car couldn't make it all the way so we parked and walked. You'll find an amazing view of all the tree tops to your left, and a large cliff to your right with undeveloped land for miles and miles. Continue down the dirt path to find some wild horses, boar and baby boar, and some cows by the sea; around the corner from this little marsh valley you'll find a beautiful pristine beach. It's a 1km wide sand bar nestled between two cliffs with a forest as your backdrop; the sand isn't fine,...

Rodopi Mountains/ Trigrad canyon

by AndreSTGT

Our day in the Rodopi Mountains in Southern Bulgaria was probably the most adventurous of the entire Eastern Europe trip. We first visited the mildly interesting Bachkovo Monastery, then took the road from Smoljan deep into the mountains, the landscape here was gorgeous and the villages looked like straight out of the 18th century and this is were our road trip turned into an off-road adventure trip. The first obstacle on the road were fallen rocks. It needed the force of three healthy, young men (that was us) to push them off the road. Shortly after that we came to a wooden bridge over the river, unfortunately it had crashed down, so we had to take a detour through the relatively deep water. Fortunately we had a 4x4, otherwise we would have been stuck. After a while we eventually reached a paved road which led us to the spectacular Trigrad canyon, a hiker's paradise in a remote mountain...

Iskar Valley 1

by alan1972

The Rila and Pirin Mountains are higher and probably better known, but the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) are also worth a visit. If you're based in Sofia it's easy to visit the Iskar Valley as a daytrip by train. Not all trains stop at the smaller stations so check timetables. This picture was taken just after getting off the train at Gara Lakatnik. Just across the bridge is a cafe which marks the start of a trail that goes up the side of the cliff. It looks intimidating but it doesn't actually take long to get to the top. The views along the way make the effort worthwhile.
