Asenovgrad

by alan1972

The town of Asenovgrad is well worth visiting if you are staying in Plovidv. There are a variety of trails along the sides of the valley to the south of the town. You can walk to a number of small religious buildings as well as the larger Church of Sveta Bogoroditsa (visible in the distance in the photo). Near the church is a ruined fortress with wonderful views. It's an easy excursion from Plovdiv as there are regular trains to Asenovgrad. You could also stop off on the way to or from Bachkovo Monastery,

Jump on any bus

by Backpackin_Mac

The best way to see around Sophia is to just jump on any bus and take it to the end of the line. We did this many times and ended up on top of mountains looking at amzing scenery or ended in a little village covered in snow.

Istanbul (2)

by ger4444

How to go to Istanbul from Bulgaria? There are three possibilties. Hitchhike from one of the major parking places and gas stations outside Sofia, at the highway might be a good opportunity. Just ask around at the truck drivers restaurant if anyone is going to Istanbul, since the highway is connected directly to Istanbul the change of getting a pick-up is very great. The other possibility is, as I did, get a bus from the northern bus station in Sofia, which is called the Princess Hotel bus station. You will have there a bus that takes you within 8 or 9 hours to Istanbul. The third way of getting there is by train: The Balkan express leaves Sofia on daily basis to Istanbul at 5.13 pm and arrives in Istanbul at 8.27 am. However, there are only sleeping carriages available. So, a ride to Istanbul from Sofia will cost you 50 lv for second class. This train leaves from Istanbul at 8.27 am. But...

Istanbul(1)

by ger4444

If you really have that urge to overkill yourself with culture go to Istanbul. This city is, when you happen to be in the south east of Bulgaria within the reach of your hands, so why not passing the border and use the opportunity? I did, because I could not resist this opportunity and besides a was going to meet a good friend of mine over there. If you want to change the scenery of national revival architecture for the architecture of the former enemy of the Bulgarians, you have with Istanbul a good alternative. This megapolis, which is situated at the Bosporus and is the bridge between Europe and Asia, bursts out architectural beauty and has an exquisite street scenery. You will find everything you want: beautiful mosques, reminders of the Romans – for having been the capital of the east-roman Empire, also called Constantine polis, that is, Constantinople, there are lots of traces of...

Koprivshtitsa

by AndreSTGT

Koprivshtitsa is a historically significant village with beautiful, traditional houses, cobblestone alleys and museums with information about Bulgaria's national revival period (yes, it's more interesting than it sounds). The entire village has the feel of an open-air museum, very sophisticated. It's one of Bulgaria's highlights and pleasantly untouristy.

In summer when i visited, Bansko, at the foot of the impressive Pirin mountain range, looked like a nice, quaint village, very relaxed and quiet. In winter, however, this sleepy place must be one of Bulgaria's most popular ski resorts.

Veliko Tarnovo

by AndreSTGT

Veliko Tarnovo is one of Bulgaria's most picturesque towns with plenty of bars and cafés. The biggest attraction is the Tsarevets Fortress built between the 8-10th century. From its walls there are dramatic vistas over the town and its beautiful surrounding countryside with gorges, green valleys and limestone formations. There are many quaint villages in these valleys and along the river below the town center. The town's tourist office gets my personal award for the friendliest staff and the best service in Europe.

Bulgaria from my point o view

by Beograd

I visited this country almost ten years ago with my parents. We have many friends there and we wnt to the Black Sea together. But before that, we were in Sofia, the capital. Bulgaria is a beautiful country with very friendly people, but I wasn't an ordinary tourist. My Father has been there many times before, and besides we went everywhere with our friends. At the time, there was a big economy crisis and people were living with big difficulties. It was the first time that I saw cigarettes soled by pieces. It was a shock for me. Not many people know that Black Sea used to be very rich with dolphins untill 1950's, when hunters from all over the world came. Older people remember that the sea used to be red for weeks of dolphin blod. One of the most beautiful towns in Bulgaria is Stara Zagora (and it has a brewary with very good beer, for those of you who like it). There are many things to be...

The trip to Batshkovo Monastery

by krassimir71

Bachkovo Monastery is located above the Plovdiv-Smolyan road, 29 km away from Plovdiv, 89 km away from Sofia and 10 km away from Assenovgrad, it is not far from Pamporovo mountain resort. This is the second in size and importance monastery in Bulgaria - a real Holy Cloister. A prominent Byzantine statesman, of Georgian origin, founded it in 1083. It does not look the same as it was when established because it was destroyed by fire more than once and then restored. .. that photo is taken during our vist there ..
