  • the village

People that visit the Bachkovo monastery light candles and pray and probably they have lunch at the one of the restaurants in the village. I guess most of the visitors do the same so don’t expect to spend more than 1-2 hours if you come only for the monastery. Of course you can walk a bit in the village or in the paths around, don’t forget that the...

Bachkovo Restaurants

  • eating at Bachkovo

In Bachkovo there are some restaurants if you want to have a proper lunch but also some smaller places where you can have breakfast or just drink a coffee. We just entered one of them… did I say enter? Hm, actually ther was a stall with a lady preparing sandwiches and another one making coffee but there was also a protected area (with pvc) next to...

  • Tasty food, but bad service!

We have visited this restaurant in the middle of November on our way to Pamporovo. It's situated on your left next to the main road (if you are coming from Plovdiv), nearby the famous Bachkovo Monastery. This relatively big venue in folk style has two floors so you can choose where to sit. Once we sat we have been surrounded by some old-age-waiters...

  • how to move around

The village is small and the monastery is only 1km away so you will just walk around. In winter it was kind of tricky though with a lot of ice but it was beautiful anyway and yes we lighted a candle in the church because we didnt break anything to approach the monastery :) The path that leads to the monastery is full of stalls and kiosks with...

Bachkovo is a popular tourist destination with so many people visiting the monastery every year. From the main road there is a path that leads to the monastery so it was no surprise that there were so many stalls on both side of the path with local people selling a variety of things...

So what you will see in front of you is:
local honey (4leva for a small jar), cheese and yoghurt, some unknown herbs, homemade jams and sweets with wild fruits. They also sell a lot of handcrafts, souvenirs, the typical magnets (3leva) but also woolen blankets (typical in Rhodope area), woven baskets, jewelries, religious icons etc

The Bachkovo Monastery was founded in the 11th century. Its architectural, artistic and cultural significance is comparable only with that of the Rila Monastery. A lot of visitors come here to see the wonderfully preserved frescos from the early 17C. The museum contains a rich collection of old icons and gospels, coins and jewelry, and the library...

One of the oldest monasteries in the Bulgarian lands, it rises in the picturesque Chaya river valley, 29 km south of Plovdiv. Founded in 1083, Bachkovo Monastery is chiefly known for its original architecture, rich collections of old icons, jewelry, coins and church plate.

  • Church

The library preserves many valuable incunabula and old manuscripts. Its most remarkable feature, however, are the paintings that are seen everywhere - in the church and ossuary, where the figure of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander is discernible among the 11th and 14th century murals, in the refectory (1601), in the Assumption of the Blessed...
