The Historical Museum is housed in one of those ugly concrete blocs in the centre of Smolyan. The exhibits range from archeological finds (lots of Thracian goods) to tradional costumes and tools.
There are labels in Bulgarian and English aswell as information sheets in a few other languages for each room.
The Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm and admission is 3 BGN.

The planetarium in Smolyan was the first of its kind i found in Bulgaria. It has a couple of different shows throughout the week. The one I visited gave an explanation of the night sky and a tour of our solar system.
Admission is 2 BGN for the show in Bulgarian and 5 BGN for shows in other languages.

The popular ski resort of Pamporovo is situated only 15km to the North of Smolyan and if you're into skiing it's the place to go. Otherwise you can also just take the lift up to the Snezhanka tower from where you have fantastic vistas over the surrounding area or go hiking.
During my summer visit a lot of construction work was going on here, so it wasn't such a pleasure to walk around.

This church is difficult to be missed. Located on the main street in New Smolyan district it is so massive (and ugly in my opinion). It is named St. Visarion Smolyanski.
