Happy Bar & Grill: The TGIFriday's of Bulgaria

by Dabs

After our walking tour of Sofia, we were looking for a spot to have lunch outdoors and we selected Happy Bar & Grill since it appeared in all of our guides as a decent place to eat. It reminds me a bit of TGIFriday's or Chili's in the US, the food is good but it's a chain. The colored laminated menu has oodles of reasonably priced options, salads, sandwiches, grilled meats and side dishes. We didn't want to overeat so we selected a couple of starters, fried yellow cheese, french fries with cheese and a grilled meat combination to share between the two of us

Ljutenitsa

by desert_princess

This is a traditional bulgarian thing ,made out of red peppers ,tomatoes and spices and I love it!!!You just spread it on bread , put feta cheese , boiled egg or some salami on it. I often use it to cook spaghetti bolognese - great aswell!! Delicious!!My favorite is the one from Olineza. Don't miss the chance to try it - you can eat this only in Bulgaria.

Try the typical bulgarian restaurants

by Linse

The bulgarian kitchen is inspired by the turkish and greek kitchen, but they also have McDonalds if u just want some fastfood.Try to go to the village Sveti Vlas located 5 km from Sunny beach in the opposite directions of Nessebar. Here i can recommend to visit restaurant Miami which serve great food, have a very fine service and the prices are a little bit cheaper than in Sunny Beach.

Types Of Restaurant: Eating at the Seaside

by johngayton

The whole of Bulgaria's eastern border is the Black Sea. The coastline stretches for about 380 km over the course of which there's a very diverse range of attractions:There are beach resorts such as Golden Sands and Sunny Beach (Zlatni Piasatsi and Slunchev Briag) with their modern hotels and international appeal.Historically important sites such as Sozopol and the UNESCO-listed Nesebar showcase the area's cultural development from Thracian times through to the National Renaissance. The twin port cities of Varna and Burgas, respectively Bulgaria's third and fourth largest cities, vie with each other across the board as to which is the most appealing. Off the beaten path there are rocky headlands northwards, around Kavarna, and relatively undeveloped villages in the south such as Sinomorets (population 216 in 2005).So whilst there is this amazing diversity of scenery, foodwise what they...

An Overview: And Of Course Don't Forget About The Booze!

by johngayton

As with its food Bulgaria has some unique contributions to make to the further destruction of my liver. Ach, I meant to write - to us connoisseurs of fine wines, brandies and beers.Bulgaria's wine tradition can be traced back to Thracian times (pre AD) and although much of the production became industrialised during the Communist era it was still the same vines and varieties that were used, just on a larger scale. Modern Bulgarian wines are now, in my opinion, as good as any and a darn sight cheaper than most. Even the modern, trendy, restaurants which may offer an International selection tend to showcase local wines and some of these really are outstanding. The Country has two indigenous grape varieties, Mavrud and Shiroka Melnishka Loza (usually simply referred to as Melnik), as well as growing more commonplace strains. In restaurants the local wines are incredibly inexpensive with a...

Types Of Restaurant: Fine Dining

by johngayton

Bulgarians definitely prefer the social aspect of eating rather than the more formal style of what I call "Fine Dining" and so there are relatively few such establishments around and those that there are tend to be more aimed at us tourists. That's not to say that the locals don't enjoy good food but rather that the food is almost secondary to the eating-out experience. In my travels so far I've only come across four places which I would describe as "Fine Dining", two of which were excellent and two of which were aspirational but ultimately disappointing. The two that really impressed me were entirely different. Varna's Pri Monahinite("At The Nuns") is set up as a formal variation on the Mehana theme and its eight page menu follows the lines of classical Bulgarian cuisine but raises the tempo a notch with superb cooking, presentation and excellent service. At the other end of the scale...

Types Of Restaurant: Street Food

by johngayton

Bulgarians are great grazers and everywhere you go you'll come across stalls and shacks selling all manner of food for eating on-the-hoof. Traditional snacks (Zakuski) include the sirene cheese-filled Banitsa (either in flaky filo pastry or a bread-type dough), the bagel-like Gevrek and seasonal items such as corn-on-the-cob and roast chestnuts.Takeaway pizza has almost become a National dish and you'll also find Doner Kebabs, Hot Dogs and Burgers.Everything is pretty cheap and you can expect to pay up to 1 lev for a banitsa and up to 1.5 for a well-topped slice of pizza. As well as food stands you'll also find coffee machines on every main street and the Espresso is normally freshly made and rarely costs more than 40 stotinki. For the really budget conscious just about every town has public fountains fed by local springs to fill your water bottle.

Types Of Restaurants: Modern Bulgarian Chain Places

by johngayton

From my Bulgarian visits so far I've only come across two of what I would describe as "modern national chain restaurants": Happy and Godzila. Normally I'm not a great fan of chain places, having worked for a few here in the UK, as the food is usually very bland and aimed to appeal to the tastebudless masses. Here in Bulgaria I was very impressed with the operations and the food at both Happy and Godzila.Happy styles itself as an American-style "Bar and Grill" and indeed does have a sort of "Hard Rock Cafe" type ambience. Godzila themes itself as a "Pizzeria" and their restaurants are bright and arty and wouldn't be out of place in any European town or city. What I'm particularly impressed with is that both these chains have developed their menus from the standpoint of traditional Bulgarian cuisine, tweaking and modernising as they've grown. The menus may look eclectically international,...

Types Of Restaurant: Bulgarian Kitchens

by johngayton

For inexpensive sit-down eats you can't beat these canteen-style "Bulgarian Kitchen" places. The two main companies to look out for are Trops Kushta and BMS, both of which offer a range of traditional dishes, salads, accompaniements and beverages (including beer). You'll find one, or more, in most city and town centres and whilst they are cheap the food is actually very good. Everything is freshly made on the premises in batches, appetizingly-displayed in hot and cold counters and service is usually friendly and helpful. Even if your Bulgarian isn't up to asking for things by name the "Point and Edna Molya" technique of ordering seems to work and you can get get a perfectly substantial (and healthy) fast-food lunch for 5 or 6 leva. For the really budget-conscious, if you eat in the evening as they start to wind-down (they usually close about 9 or 10 pm) then everything is seriously...

Types Of Restaurant: International Eating

by johngayton

Bulgaria is rapidly becoming quite a cosmopolitan country so far as eating out goes. In the cities you'll find a host of international cuisines including Italian (pizza has become almost a national dish!), Chinese (immigration has advanced significantly following the collapse of Communism), Armenian (which has similar roots to Bulgarian), Irish (although not quite like in Ireland) and even Belgian (as evidenced by the popular Rozenhof in Plovdiv). No matter how cosmopolitan the restaurant however they still seem to follow the traditional menu set-up of salads, appetizers and grills and by using local produce keep a defintite Bulgarian qualitativeness to the food.Anyway here's a few illustrative pics:
