Pine trees by hekate Borovets, formerly known as Cham Koria (meaning pine forest in Turkish) is the oldest Bulgarian mountain resort, which dates back to 1896. Besides being a fabulous place for skiing it also a great starting point for hiking in Rila. Contrary to most of the people who would recommend you to go there during the winter I would advise you to pay a visit during summer time. For me there is nothing better than walk around there and feel the sun shining and the fresh air :) If you would like to learn more about Borovets you may have a look at my Borovets page :))) Leave a Comment Theme: HikingAddress: South west BulgariaDirections: 73 km from Sofia 126 km from Plovdiv. 10 km down the road from Samokov.

Birdwatching at Kaliakra by zlatiq Bulgaria has many good places for birdwatching. Among them are 1.Srebarna near the city of Silistra in NE Bullgaria (Srebarna is an UNESCO heritage) 2. The steppe reserve at cape Kaliakra, also in NE Bulgaria, close to the city of Kavarna. I've seen lots of shags down at the cape and they're so interseting! Also the reserve is inhabitated by Short-toed Lark,Pied Wheatear, Stone Curlew and Calandra Lark, raptors like Long-legged Buzzard, Saker Falkon and Red-footed Falcon. 3. Atanasovsko ezero/lake near Bourgas Leave a Comment

One of many pools by ettenaj All along the front in Golden Sands are swimming pools for the use of anyone who wants to use them. I think you may have to buy a drink from the bar but it is a great idea for if you have a hotel with no pool you could use anyone of these. Really geared up for families, congratulations for that!! by ger4444 In Bulgaria I did some biking in the countryside and it was just great! Itýs a pleasant way of getting around or explore little village in the neighboarhood of the town you are staying. However, since there are many mountains in the county it also can be very though. If you are interested in a mountainbike trip, I can recommend the area around Gabrovo. You can rent mountain bikes via tourist offices that cooperate with Stara Planina. The main office of Stara Planina is in Gabrovo; the other branches can be found in Troyan and Teteven. Other places where you can rent bikes are: the Odysseia-In Travel in Sofia (take a mountainbike to the mt. Vitosha, to Aleko!) Biking in Bulgaria is really in some way a bit challenging: the roads are often ij a bad condition, so that you often are bumping over the bumps and holes in the road so that you are getting very tired in your arms. Also traffic can be very rude and unfriendly for bikers. But on roads between village you wont find traffic crowds. You often can also get your bike in the luggage room of busses, so that you can make a long trip from the town you are staying and then go back by bus; so that you donýt have to do the same road twice! You will however have to pay some extra money for the bike when you want to carry it with you in the bus. Leave a Comment Theme: Biking

boundary marker at Pirin park by ger4444 There are numerous of hiking trails in Bulgaria. There are trails for short hikes and for long-distance hikes. The tracks start at the village or town situated next to the mountain area (mostly this area is a national park). In these towns and villages however, the exact place, where the track starts can be difficult to find. Best ask at the local tourist information. Or, at the office, that is responsible for the national park in which the tracks are situated. These offices can provide you a lot of ý free ý information, like maps etc. I was at the Pirin National Park office and these guys where really helpful to give me all the necessary info. That is, because not many tourist come to these offices, so that they like a little distraction I guess! The trail on the maps and on the signposts are yellow, red, green and blue. These signs mostly show also the names of the mountainhuts the track is leading to, so it is necessary that you can read Cyrillic. When you decide to go hiking, it is not necessary to have a tent with you. Along the trails there are enough mountainhuts. Its easy to reach the next hut in one day. But if you want to bypass the trail, then of course bring the tent with you. However, it is not recommended to do so, because it could be dangerous. (falling rocks etc) Camping in the wild is officially forbidden, but accepted if you behave (donýt make a fire or leave all your garbage on the ground) If you want to buy maps, and you are planning a long-distance hike, you can find maps at bookshops in Sofia. But the Odysseia-In Travel has also maps. Leave a Comment Theme: Hiking

some of the few watersports availlable by ger4444 Water sports are poor in Bulgaria. I was at the Black sea coast and found out that the facilities where not quite overwhelming. I haven?t seen surfers, bodyboarders or jetskiers at all. However, in Albena ? the ?sportscapital of Bulgaria? ? there ought to be facilities I heard. What about swimming then? The beaches of Zlatni Pyasatsi (Golden Sands) are famous for being sandy, long and clean. The water is ? in summer ? warm and pleasnt to swim in, although the prominently present jellyfish in the water may not be so attractive. The lakes in the mountains are, in case the weather is good, also a fantastic place to swim. They are clear, small and calm and are in situated in a beautiful scenery. Especially the Ribno lake was appealing. It was however so frustrating that there were no jet skiing- and speedboatfacilities on the lake? Leave a Comment Theme: Other

do the mountain! by ger4444 If you are interested in mountaineering but do not have the equipment for it and don?t want to hire this equipment (I do not know if hiring is possible at all) you wont have a problem in Bulgaria. Of course its, as it comes to mountaineering, more excited to choose the highest mountains. Well, in the Pirin mountains you can find the second highest mountain of Bulgaria; that is the mt. Vihren (over 2900 meters). To climb this mountain you don?t need equipment. You can climb the path, although sometimes its though for the path is steep. It can be helpful to have a stick with you. At the mt. Vihren I saw seniors easily climbing up and down the mountain while wearing sandals on their feeds. However, I really commend to wear at least hiking-boots. For, the weather in the mountains can suddenly change abrupt and then you find yourself in the pouring rain, trying to get down from the mountain top on slippery rocks. If you are wearing sandals then, you might have a problem. So, in relation to this, before you go leave the mountainhut, check at the staff what the weather conditions are. If you really want to buy mountaineering gear, you can buy it in Sofia at Stenata. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
