Trekking and walking in Rodopi and Pirin mountains. Both are very good place to visit. Please only don't do that through travel agencies like Penguin Travel.Just contact local hotels and ask for guides. This will be twice cheaper and you’ll be much more welcome. Basically, there’re following activities in those two regions:Rodopi (Trigrad):Hill walkingCaving4x4 tours Horse riddingCycling Wild mushrooms and berriesVillage living. Pirin (Bansko)TrekkingSki (winter)CampingFishing (weekends only!)Wild mushrooms and berries Bring your own equipment. Don't rely on locals. There are no shops in Rodopi and not too much in Pirin. But if you are not too fastidious about brands, you'll probably find good and not expensive equipment in Bansko

Bulgaria has beautiful mountains and long traditions in hiking. Trails vary from easy to little bit harder, but there is no problem of high altitude even in Rila ( the highest mountain range in BG). It's little bit harder to get info on trails and cabins from the web, as not much is in english. During peak season and around holidays it's a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation, although once someone told me that nobody is sent away from a cabin in the mountain...that is,they will always, always find a way to fit you in.Rila and Pirin are the highest mountain ranges, but Stara Planina is also very impressive and one can plan on hiking all the way from the west to the east end of Stara Planina.Unfortunately the Bulgarian Tourism Union website, which is supposed to have a list of the huts managed by them is under construction or totally forgotten. But here is their...

Skiing - often expensive and exclusive. Well, not in Bulgaria! If you've always wanted to try skiing but thought you couldn't afford the Alps, this might be the place for you. Bulgaria has a few ski resorts with ski schools to get you started. I visited Pamporovo and used their ski school. The instructor was extremely patient, helpful and encouraging. I am very thankful to have had such a cheerful and friendly teacher who really made a difference to my skiing. Hire skis, ski boots and sticks there.Bring your own walking boots (Timberlands are ideal), thermal underclothes, ski tube socks, ski gloves, ski jacket, ski trousers/pants, woolly hat, scarf etc. Layer your clothes and have plenty of hot drinks.
Well in a few words to resume our ski resorts :Sofia's own mountain - Vitosha is mainly a local resort it tends to get crowded on the weekends. The option of staying on the mountain is not to consider as there is nothing to do. Having accomodation in Sofia is better as the mountain is just 8km from the center of the city, But do u wanna stay in a 1,2 million town for your holiday? Plus from what I heard in the latest years due to its low altitude 2290m it is not snow guaranteed.Borovets is our oldest ski resort, it used to be the king's recreation place. It is a purpose built resort to accomodate large amounts of package foreign tourists. And the prices are 2-3 times higher than is our local resorts, still cheap for you guys. The place has lotsa entertainment till late in the night. Watch out for the cab drivers , they will rip u off you don't need a cab anyways everything is at 10 min...

The National and Nature parks in Bulgaria are treasures of Mother nature in our lands. High jagged mointains , glacial lakes , immaculate nature .Great for hikes , mountain climbing , bird watching - and all those outdoor activities. good hiking shoes , rain coat , maps of the area ,water

Bulgaria has many good places for birdwatching. Among them are 1.Srebarna near the city of Silistra in NE Bullgaria (Srebarna is an UNESCO heritage) 2. The steppe reserve at cape Kaliakra, also in NE Bulgaria, close to the city of Kavarna. I've seen lots of shags down at the cape and they're so interseting! Also the reserve is inhabitated by Short-toed Lark,Pied Wheatear, Stone Curlew and Calandra Lark, raptors like Long-legged Buzzard, Saker Falkon and Red-footed Falcon.3. Atanasovsko ezero/lake near Bourgas

We bought a couple of bikes this time we went to Bulgaria, it was the best thing we could have done as we saw so much more of the country side, as we went places that cars couldnt get to. We also came across some rather large puddles that needed good negotiation!!!

Borovets, formerly known as Cham Koria (meaning pine forest in Turkish) is the oldest Bulgarian mountain resort, which dates back to 1896.Besides being a fabulous place for skiing it also a great starting point for hiking in Rila. Contrary to most of the people who would recommend you to go there during the winter I would advise you to pay a visit during summer time. For me there is nothing better than walk around there and feel the sun shining and the fresh air :)If you would like to learn more about Borovets you may have a look at my Borovets page :)))
