Shipka is the place where the Turkish armies were stopped and crushed during the Liberating war (1877-1878). The monuments are made in honour to the Russian division and the Bulgarian volunteers, who fought the enemy without supplies for three days and didn't let any Turk pass to Northern Bulgaria.
There are several high waterfalls in different parts of Stara planina. Most of them are easy to reach by foot.
Raisko(to) praskalo: close to mount Botev in the middle part of Stara planina. Nearby cities - Apriltsi and Kalofer.
Kademliisko(to) praskalo: close to the mount Triglav, also in the middle of Stara planina. Nearby cities - Apriltsi and Kalofer. Next to a road, but a bad one.
Skaklia: in Western Stara planina, close to the Lakatnik rock area. Nearby cities - Svoge, Sofia, Mezdra. Close to a village. There is one more waterfall named Skaklia near Vratsa.
This is the highest mount in the Stara planina (2376 m above sea level). If the weather is clear, there's a marvellous lookaround.
The transportation in Stara planina during the winter can be tough. Many of the transport routes are blocked or closed. Hiking in the higher parts during the winter is not recommended if the weather is not good and the sky clean. Always stay in groops in any conditions and trips; even in summer it can turn bad.
