 | Bulgaria Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 271 | | The town of Melnik is so called "Museum town". What you will see there as architecture will bring you back in time. An interesting fact about Melnik is that it is the smallest town in Bulgaria. It has a little bit over 200 inhabitants. What could tempt you to go there: - as I said its unique architecture - the picturesque landscape and the natural phenomena - the Sand Pyramids. - the wine - Melnik was and it is still famous for its wines. Nearby places of interest - Rojen Monastery - 6 km away - Rupite - 20 km northeast If you want to read more about my impressions of Melnik follow this link: Melnik Leave a Comment Address: Southwestern BulgariaDirections: 24 km South east from the town of Sandanski

Koprivshtica is a charming village with lots of preserved houses from the Revival period. It is also famous for being a centre of the Bulgarian uprising against the Ottoman rule in 1876 century. Many of the houses of the revolutionary heroes are museums now. Leave a Comment

I love our town-museums. They take you in a diffrent time once you start strolling up and down the streets.Everything is preserved as in the old times. If one wants to build a house the architecture must correspond to the historical time when the town was developed...this is cool, isn't it! I love the beautifully painted houses and their interior...something that we lack back in the region of Dobrudja where i grew up. Pretty much all of the towns are in the mountains, as it seems they had more time to paint and embellish, while in Dobrudja people obviously spent more time out in the fields...and our houses are simply white..hehehe Again i'm only giving you a list and depending on your travel plans you can see any one of them Arbanassi (nearby town of Veliko Tarnovo) Bansko (southern BG) Bojenci (between GAbrovo and Tryavna) Etara (near town of Gabrovo) Koprivstica (central Bulgaria) Melnik virtualtourist Nesebar (at Black Sea, near Burgas) Old Plovdiv Shiroka Laka Sozopol (at Black sea, near Burgas) Tryavna (near Veliko Tarnovo) Jeravna (-II-) Leave a Comment

Plovdiv it Bulgaria's second biggest city and has about 350 000 inhabitants. It'a in important cultural and industrial center, as well as one of the most beautiful and historical places in Bulgaria. It has everything a big city offers (theatres, opera, concert halls, universities, TV and radio stations, clubs, restaurants, great shopping, business fairs, etc.) plus a beautiful Old Town and remains of different civilizations and era! There are enough museums for history and art buffs too. The town exists since Neolithic times and called Evmolias. It was inhabited by the Thracians, who called it Pulpudeva. In the 4 c. BC it was conquered by Philip of Macedonia II and called Philipopolis. In Roman times it was called Trimontiup (meaning, Three Hills). By the Slavs it was called Puldin. In 815 it was included within the borders of Bulgaria by Khan Krum. Later it was called Filibe by the Turkish invadors. The city had many names and each culture that inhabited or invaded it left a trace (or destroyed something left by the previous one). The most beautiful part is the Old Town, situated on a hill in the centre. The narrow cobbled streets take you to old Bulgarian Revival houses, the Roman Theatre, Thracian ruins and a fortress gate, many museums, old churches, etc. And if you get tired, there are many restaurants, cafes and clubs, most of them set in old houses too. The Old Town is an open-air museum and a protected area. For more info and photos, read my Plovdiv page. Leave a Comment

Varna is Bulgaria 3rd largest city and the country's main seaport. It's also a major transit point for tourists travelling North to the seaside resorts of Zlatni Pyassaci and Albena. But Varna itself has lots to offer: a big park (Morska Gradina) with an aquarium, a delphinarium, a zoo and a couple of other attractions, lots of museums & churches aswell as the ruins of Roman thermal baths. During summertime, Varna is host to lots of festivals, like ballet competition. Leave a Comment

Bulgaria's capital is one of Europe oldest towns. Lots of traces from it's long history are visible all around the town, like the church Sv. Petka Samardshijska right in the centre of an underpass (see pic). There aren't many "real" landmarks too see in Sofia and its mainly dominated by "socialist archtecture". But drive just a few km South and you have the Vitosha mountain rage, a great escape from Sofia's crazy traffic. Well, Sofia is certainly not one of the most charming cities on this planet (or even in Bulgaria), but it's fine for a short stay. Leave a Comment

Pamporovo is one of Bulgaria's most popular ski resorts. It's situated at an altitude of 1620m in the Rhodopi mountains. Pamprovo is supposed to be the sunniest of all winter resorts and to have snow from November to April. If you're not into skiing, there are lots of other possibilities to keep you occupied, like skating or hiking. You can also go up to the café on the tv tower on Snezhanka mountain and enjoy the views. Unfortuntely there's a lot of construction going on there and huge concret blocks are spoiling the views (June 07). Leave a Comment

Mlenik is Bulgaria smallest town (pop. less than 300). Is famous for it's architecture, strong red wine and whimsically shaped sand and limestone rocky pyramids (Melnik pyramids). During the 17th-18th century wine was so famous that it's been shipped in wine producing countries as Italy and France and Spain. The Rila Monastery is Bulgaria's most important monastary. It was bulit in the 10th century by the monk Ivan Rilski, who later was declared a saint. During Bythantine and Turkish occupation the monastary was still the most important religious centre but it slowly declined. But in the 19th century it a bulidind boom started and the monastery got back its old glory. The main church is decorated with colourful murals and is the last resting place of the remains of Ivan Rilski and Boris III, Bulgaria's last tsar. The monastery's museum displays religious objects, coins, weapons, jewelry and embroidery. Leave a Comment Directions: In the Rila Mountains, about 120km South of Sofia.
