Nesebar's old town is a Unesco World Heritage site and it's not hard to imagine why. The Revival period houses and Byzantine church ruins are build on a small peninsula which is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. Nesebar as Mesembria was founded by Thracians about 3000 BC, later settled by Greeks and Romans. It had its glory days after Byzantium took over the reign and built new walls, towers and churches. During the middle ages Nesebar belonged to the alternating to Byzantium and the 1st Bulgarian Empire. During that time Nesebar had about 80 churches, these days only few remain. During the National Revival Period rich merchants built the beautiful houses which make Nesebar so scenic. Leave a Comment Address: 37 km North of Burgas

Varna is Bulgaria 3rd largest city and the country's main seaport. It's also a major transit point for tourists travelling North to the seaside resorts of Zlatni Pyassaci and Albena. But Varna itself has lots to offer: a big park (Morska Gradina) with an aquarium, a delphinarium, a zoo and a couple of other attractions, lots of museums & churches aswell as the ruins of Roman thermal baths. During summertime, Varna is host to lots of festivals, like ballet competition. Leave a Comment

A glimps to Melnik by hekate The town of Melnik is so called "Museum town". What you will see there as architecture will bring you back in time. An interesting fact about Melnik is that it is the smallest town in Bulgaria. It has a little bit over 200 inhabitants. What could tempt you to go there: - as I said its unique architecture - the picturesque landscape and the natural phenomena - the Sand Pyramids. - the wine - Melnik was and it is still famous for its wines. Nearby places of interest - Rojen Monastery - 6 km away - Rupite - 20 km northeast If you want to read more about my impressions of Melnik follow this link: Melnik Leave a Comment Address: Southwestern BulgariaDirections: 24 km South east from the town of Sandanski

Pamporovo is one of Bulgaria's most popular ski resorts. It's situated at an altitude of 1620m in the Rhodopi mountains. Pamprovo is supposed to be the sunniest of all winter resorts and to have snow from November to April. If you're not into skiing, there are lots of other possibilities to keep you occupied, like skating or hiking. You can also go up to the café on the tv tower on Snezhanka mountain and enjoy the views. Unfortuntely there's a lot of construction going on there and huge concret blocks are spoiling the views (June 07). Leave a Comment

by bijo69 The Rila Monastery is Bulgaria's most important monastary. It was bulit in the 10th century by the monk Ivan Rilski, who later was declared a saint. During Bythantine and Turkish occupation the monastary was still the most important religious centre but it slowly declined. But in the 19th century it a bulidind boom started and the monastery got back its old glory. The main church is decorated with colourful murals and is the last resting place of the remains of Ivan Rilski and Boris III, Bulgaria's last tsar. The monastery's museum displays religious objects, coins, weapons, jewelry and embroidery. Leave a Comment Directions: In the Rila Mountains, about 120km South of Sofia.

I love our town-museums. They take you in a diffrent time once you start strolling up and down the streets.Everything is preserved as in the old times. If one wants to build a house the architecture must correspond to the historical time when the town was developed...this is cool, isn't it! I love the beautifully painted houses and their interior...something that we lack back in the region of Dobrudja where i grew up. Pretty much all of the towns are in the mountains, as it seems they had more time to paint and embellish, while in Dobrudja people obviously spent more time out in the fields...and our houses are simply white..hehehe Again i'm only giving you a list and depending on your travel plans you can see any one of them Arbanassi (nearby town of Veliko Tarnovo) Bansko (southern BG) Bojenci (between GAbrovo and Tryavna) Etara (near town of Gabrovo) Koprivstica (central Bulgaria) Melnik virtualtourist Nesebar (at Black Sea, near Burgas) Old Plovdiv Shiroka Laka Sozopol (at Black sea, near Burgas) Tryavna (near Veliko Tarnovo) Jeravna (-II-) Leave a Comment

by bijo69 Veliko Turnovo's setting is spectacular. The town is built on hills along the meandering river Yantra . Besides that, V. Turnovo is an important historical place. It was the capital of the 2nd Bulgarian empire from 1187-1393. The remains of that time are being excavated on Carevec hill, the most significant landmark here. The old town is very beautiful aswell, with restored houses from the revival period. Leave a Comment
