Plovdiv it Bulgaria's second biggest city and has about 350 000 inhabitants. It'a in important cultural and industrial center, as well as one of the most beautiful and historical places in Bulgaria. It has everything a big city offers (theatres, opera, concert halls, universities, TV and radio stations, clubs, restaurants, great shopping, business fairs, etc.) plus a beautiful Old Town and remains of different civilizations and era! There are enough museums for history and art buffs too. The town exists since Neolithic times and called Evmolias. It was inhabited by the Thracians, who called it Pulpudeva. In the 4 c. BC it was conquered by Philip of Macedonia II and called Philipopolis. In Roman times it was called Trimontiup (meaning, Three Hills). By the Slavs it was called Puldin. In 815 it was included within the borders of Bulgaria by Khan Krum. Later it was called Filibe by the Turkish invadors. The city had many names and each culture that inhabited or invaded it left a trace (or destroyed something left by the previous one). The most beautiful part is the Old Town, situated on a hill in the centre. The narrow cobbled streets take you to old Bulgarian Revival houses, the Roman Theatre, Thracian ruins and a fortress gate, many museums, old churches, etc. And if you get tired, there are many restaurants, cafes and clubs, most of them set in old houses too. The Old Town is an open-air museum and a protected area. For more info and photos, read my Plovdiv page. Leave a Comment

Bachkovo Monastery was founded in 1083, later destroyed by the Ottoman Turks, and rebuilt between the 17th and 19th centuries. It's the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria. The cathedral church is from the beginning of the 17th century. There are some beautiful frescoes from the 19th century done by Bulgaria's most famous icon painter, Zachariy Zograf. There is also a precious icon of Virgin Mary, brough from Georgia in the 14th century. The crypt is the only 11th-century building that has survived. Bachkovo Monastery is about 30km south of Plovdiv, in the Rhodope Mountains. On the way there, near the town of Assenovgrad, you can also see the ruins of Assen's Fortress (Assenova Krepost). This medieval fortress was built during the reign of the great Tsar Ivan Assen II (Second Bulgarian Kingdom). There are some ruins left and a well preserved and restored church. It's on top of a green hill and makes a beautiful sight. Nesebar, or, Nessebur, was founded about 4000 years ago and had the name Mesambria. In 6c. BC it became the first Hellenic Greek colony on the coast and was called Mesemvria. During the 3rd century BC it was a flourishing town. The Old Town, situated on a peninsula and surrounded by a partially preserved city wall, is an open-air museum with a lot of ruins from all eras, old churches, and old Bulgarian houses. No wonder a UNESCO heritage site! Once there were about 40 churches on the small peninsula, now there are 14 better preserved. Besides the history of the place, there’s the sea too! In the middle of the narrow road connecting the Old Town with the mainland, new town, and Sunny Beach resort, there’s a windmill. Leave a Comment

Melnik by zlatiq Mlenik is Bulgaria smallest town (pop. less than 300). Is famous for it's architecture, strong red wine and whimsically shaped sand and limestone rocky pyramids (Melnik pyramids). During the 17th-18th century wine was so famous that it's been shipped in wine producing countries as Italy and France and Spain. balchik-the palace by zlatiq Balchik is a cute little town by the seaside. In the summer is a great attraction for tourist especially the ones staying in the nearby resort Albena. But still, it's worth taking a walk on it's cobblestone streets downtown all the way up to it's main church from where a beautiful panoramic view is revealed. Then after all the efforts spend climbing up the hill u can head down towards the beach, walk along the alley south towards the Quenn's Maria Palace (Dvoreca). It was build as a summer residence, so it's more like a villa than a palace. But don't get disapointed because the real gem is the beatiful gardens and waterfalls and ornamental pools. The thing i'm most proud of is the botanical garden at Dvoreca; it belongs to the Biology department, Sofia University! Not only beautiful species, but very valuable (like the living fossil Ginko biloba..see my Balchik page for more). I just love that place! Burgas is the biggest town of the Southern part of the Black Sea coast and getaway for the resorts and other seaside towns in that area. Burgas hasn't much to offer in terms of sights, but it's still a pleasant place to visit. There's the beautiful park close to the shore which is dotted with monuments and children's playgrounds and a busy pedestrian mall. The beach itself isn't great in Burgas, but it's not that far to Sunny Beach. Leave a Comment

Church of Sv. Petka Samardshijska by bijo69 Bulgaria's capital is one of Europe oldest towns. Lots of traces from it's long history are visible all around the town, like the church Sv. Petka Samardshijska right in the centre of an underpass (see pic). There aren't many "real" landmarks too see in Sofia and its mainly dominated by "socialist archtecture". But drive just a few km South and you have the Vitosha mountain rage, a great escape from Sofia's crazy traffic. Well, Sofia is certainly not one of the most charming cities on this planet (or even in Bulgaria), but it's fine for a short stay. Leave a Comment

Rila Monastery by zlatiq The monastery is a part of the UNESCO's World Heritage List. Brief description by UNESCO: The Convent of Rila, rebuilt between 1834 and 1860, incorporates the legacies of Saint Ivan of Rilski, 10th-century evangelist of the Slavs, and the remains of a medieval monastery into a distinctive neo- Byzantine monument. Characteristic of the Bulgarian Renaissance, this monument symbolises the awareness of a Slavic cultural identity following centuries of occupation. veliko tarnovo-tcarevec by zlatiq Pliska Veliki Preslav Veliko Tarnovo These three places are often on the list of organised tours. Pliska and Preslav are are arheological digs whre you can see the bases of once existing palaces. Veliko Tarnovo is a relatively big city which i really love. I love the cute little steepy streets (which i don't to climb in the winter:)), the houses stacked on top of each other, the old town and the amaizng views. My favorite though is "Tcarevec" hill with the castle perched on its top. It's a shame, but i've never been to PLiska and Preslav, though they are close to my hometown.I guess we take things for granted in our backyard and don't pay much attention to them. I still haven't put together my Tarnovo page, but more info you can find on the city web site. You would really love the city. I think Tarnovo is my favorite city in Bulgaria. http://www.veliko-tarnovo.net/english-vijte/eng-br-1/ Leave a Comment
