Rila Monastery - 119 km south of Sofia

by angiebabe

119 km south of Rila - 3 hours by bus - or 2 hours by car (depending on how many stops along the way to take photos!) is Bulgaria's largest and most famous monastery.Founded in 927 by Ivan Rilksi as a colony of hermits, it was moved 3km to its present location. but after being destroyed by fire in 1833 it was rebuilt in an even grander scale as a superb monument of the Bulgarian medieval and National REvival period architecture and painting. Though one Bulgaria guidebook published in Bulgaria says that there are still murals here from the 14th century. The whole complex is certainly strikingly artistic and colourful - from the 4 levels of balconies and arcades with its 300 rooms, to the church with its exterior covered in murals and the interior heavily adorned with much iconostasis - even I was quite amazed - but no photos were allowed inside the church. There apparently is accommmodation...

Sofia Synagogue-beautiful Bulgarian Romanticsm

by angiebabe

The information provided at this synagogue that I thankfully was able to visit, says:Sofia's synagogue is one of the largest Sephardic synagogues in Europe and one of the most architectural monuments. There is a commemorative tablet in the synagogue for the occasion of its sanctification which took place on 9 September 1909 in the presence of the Tsar's family. In Bulgarian National Romanticsm style this project was the work of the Austrian architect F.Grunanger.The altar is on a podium of white marble with an exquisite parapet. The hall seats 1170 and is covered with an octagonal dome with a lantern 20m in diameter and 31m in height. The facades are richly decorated with architectural details and stone carvings and the interior with works of applied art.The chandelier weighs 2 tons! and is the largest in Bulgaria. The floor of the synagogue is covered with Venetian polychrome mosaic.A...

Sofia Synagogue - history of Bulgaria's Jews

by angiebabe

My Lonely Planet's pages on Sofia included the Synagogue here as a site to see - I walked around the exterior twice to find what seemed an open entrance and asked a street cleaner who didnt speak english but gestured back around where Id come from - when I got around back to the closed gate a man inside the gate who had a few tourist looking people replied that yes I could still come in if I wanted - as far as I was aware it was getting close to closing hours so I was very appreciative of his kindness and willingness to not only let me in but give me about 5 or 10 minutes of dialogue telling me about the synagogue and a bit of the history of the Jews in Bulgaria. What Id not known before and found very interesting was that Bulgaria was one of the only 2 countries in Europe to have been able to prevent the Nazis/HItler from taking ANY of their jewish population - then after WW2 there was a...

by angiebabe

So many beautiful buildings to see here - bold and dramatic architecture of huge and impressive buildings - pillars and statues of statuesque men! or angels! - art deco - artistic use of shapes and colours - and some in various states of decline - interesting to also see the building that was once the headquarters of the Communist party - along with the old churches, synagogue and mosque of the religious mix here.

Shipka Pass

by bijo69

Shipka Pass is a 1306m high pass over the Stara Planina mountains. It is a very important place for Bulgarian history. Four battles between Russian/Bulgarian troops and the Ottoman army took place here, killing thousands on both sides and resulting in success for the Russian/Bulgarian army. To commemorate those lost during the battle a monument was built on top of Mt. Stoletov (named after one of the Russian commanders) next to the pass. You can go up the monument which houses an exhibition of paintings, medals, uniforms etc about the battles for 2 BGN.Views from top of the monument are fantastic too!

Museum of mosaics - Devnya

by mirchica

The Museum of Mosaics in Devnya displays early-Byzantine mosaics from Marcianopolis. The idea for its organization was born within the process of archeologic research in 1976. In the process of research, a large late-Roman building decorated with mosaics was found The Museum was built by project of Architect Kamen Goranov standing partly on the ancient foundations of the building with the mosaics. This ancient building was erected at the end of the 3rd – the beginning of 4th c (the time of Constantine The Great) on the location of earlier building that had been destroyed during the Gotts invasions of 250–251. This building existed with repairs and reconstructions until the beginning of the 7th c.The museum halls display diverse exhibits related to the architecture of the building and domestic life of its residents.

Kazanluk

by bijo69

Kazanluk is a very pleasant town in the valley of roses. There's quite a lot to see in the town aswell as in the vicinity: a Thracian tomb with exquisite murals (and lots of simpler ones just out of town), the museum of roses, an ethnografic museum, some churches and a mosque. The beautiful Stara Planina mountains are just half an hour drive away aswell.

In 1940, after the reincopration of Southern Dobruja in Bulgaria with the Treaty of Craiova, the Balchik Botanical Garden was established at the place of the palace's park.
